Thanks to all who've taken the time to offer their opinion, advice, and particularly links to prior detailed related discussions. I think I have a much better understanding of this subject now - but need to take more time to fully read some more when I have something easier than my phone to do so on.

One question I do have in the interim though is whether or not to have an on/off switch for the power supply to the Echo-charge for longer periods when the house battery is not being charged - boat at a mooring without solar/wind/etc. I gather it consumes v little amperage but why not have the option to turn it off?

no need to put a switch on the echo charger they only respond to charging current and just sit there when there is no charge coming to the bats

Of course, if Xantrex user/installation guide is WRONG, then I was commenting on that Manufacturer WRONG stuff.:D (noted: in your link ) Oh well!:troll:

In their WRONG guide, why did they show the starter battery not being grounded? So if they are wrong, and you don't follow what they said in their WRONG installation then I guess their warranty is also WRONG. I only offer my educated opinion.

Now using my education....

It is impossible to overcharge an untampered lead acid battery from any electrical DC source!

You CAN...
1) MELT IT... by using high enough volts to break down the cell to cell insulation. I guess 400VDC would do it.
2) Short it out... High amp discharge to coat the lead plates permanently. (protect with fuses)
3) Train the discharge/charge cycle wrong to lose longevity. (balance or boost charge them)
4) Break a cell by improper strapping in high seas...

Why?

A new battery starts with a fixed quantity of lead and a know strength of the electrolyte (H2SO4 + water). It starts it life fully charged. Charges just reverses the PbSO4 > H2SO4 (simple view)
How can you make more H2SO4 than you put into the battery (originally) with just electricity?

YOU CAN'T!!!

The above in not an opinion!;)

Jim...

PS: sips his cold beer.... aahhhhhh!
