I have heard from several sources that it is advisable to replace both batteries when one goes bad even though one is still OK. Comments?

Are the batteries the same year? If ya don't know there should be a build date in the ser # or sticker on side , used for same function or charged by a one bank battery charger If they are paralleled then yes they need to be changed at same time.

Yes, you should always replace the batteries at the same time. A fresh battery will spend itself trying to charge the older one when wired together.

the yes answer is only if you don't know or don't do any maintenece on your batts.if you know how to use a specific gravity tester to check your cells then its absolutly stupid to throw out a good battery that could last 3-4 more years.most boaters are lazy and don't really learn their boats systems and have excess cash so in that case its cheaper to buy new ones together since there is a small chance that they could fail at close to the same time.kinda lke if granpa dies you should go ahead and get rid of granma too as she is probably close to being worn out also unless your a doctor and can examine granma and tell she is in good health.
