Automotic with the right charger.
Mike: If you have the correct charger for your batteries it will automatically do it on a pre-determined cycle to optimize the life of your batteries. The Xantrex chargers have this logic built in. I am sure that most of the "smart" chargers will also do this.

That's the one I was thinking about. Steve, I've got the system in question on a top-of-the-line Xantrex charger/inverter system. Unfortunately, it cannot make power from thin air, and the generator/solar system tanked when I wasn't there to address it (system is not on my boat, but in a remote location in central Alaska). Repeated recharging/floating cycles have failed to recover the battery bank, so I think I might look into the pulser before I scrap $2000 worth of AGMs.
