At the end of the day, it doesn't matter if Thermoil's explanation of the mechanism is correct, what matters is whether it works. I haven't heard anyone say that, from their experience, or first-hand knowledge, or experimentation, that it doesn't work. I have heard from some users that it does work, regarding lessening the need to re-water.

I got into this while researching watering systems, because my batteries are a pain to reach.

If I end up doing it, I'll report back.

Faith, Belief, and Proof
A guy wearing a paper bag over his head gets on the city bus on Third Avenue in New York. He sits down next to another man. The bus moves away down the street.

After a block or two, the passenger (being a New Yorker) can’t contain himself as he looks at the guy with the bag over his head, so he asks, “Fellow, why are you wearing a bag over your head?”

The guy replys, “It’s to keep the dinosaurs away.”

“That's crazy!", the passenger responds, "Why do you think that?"

The bagged man replies through his mouth hole, "Have you ever seen a dinosaur in New York?"

Proof and Belief are sometimes like that :^)))))

Let's all maintain our sense of humor here.

This is supposed to be fun and place to share views. Being skeptical and disagreeing isn't supposed to cause angst.

Well, this guy needs to visit the American Museum of Natural History! American Museum of Natural History :)

You'll get no argument from me on that, fun and informative go along way.

Hate to dig up an old post. I am doing an electrical update on my new to me boat. I just removed the 3 4D batteries to find someone screwed the bottom of the battery boxes to a base. One of them looks to be an expensive heavy white box. Are these repairable or do I need to buy/build new ones?

glass the holes over and find a way to retain the boxes with a hold-down frame or straps. I inherited a similar situation, apparently folks forget that LA batteries spatter acid.

I don’t think you can glass over these plastic boxes. Two are cheap versions but one is heavy walled polycarbonate or some version of plastic. I hate to toss it because of two 1/4 inch holes in the bottom. I wasn’t sure if there is a fix.

Ah..I see. Would be a shame to toss them without making an attempt to repair. I might take a round hypalon patch cut for inflatable repair and butter it up with 3M 5200 and use it as a broad patch on the INSIDE of the boxes. Make sure you clean the area with acetone and scuff up the surface to improve the mechanical bond. There is a also a fast cure 3M PU adhesive that could give you a 24 hour cure.

You can “weld” the white poly boxes. Not easy but it can be done. Try a good auto body shop -they should have tools and skills to do it.

If you are going to get new batteries than why not get some kind sealed or AGM’s

Circling back on this post, I've decided against Thermoil or any other battery additive, except distilled water! So, I won't be giving it a try. As @Maine Sail points out, no battery manufacturers support additives, will void the warranty. Properly cared for batts don't need these anyway.
