At the end of the day this is an engineering problem. I'd look at the capabilities and qualifications of the guy doing the sums and the work before I passed judgment.
1) Is the center of effort of the combined sail plan currently placed?
2) Are the stay locations correct to both support and adjust the rig?
3) Are the stays sized to support the new load factors and angles?
4) What provisions have been made to the Righting Force of the boat to deal with the extra pressure of the rig?
5) Are the spar sections (mast and boom) capable of dealing with the new (increased) load?
I will stay that without someone knowing what they are really doing, its going to be a disaster.
