Maybe its just my work computer but I can't see what you posted here?
;^)

Its the character from 'Mad Science"

At the end of the day this is an engineering problem. I'd look at the capabilities and qualifications of the guy doing the sums and the work before I passed judgment.

1) Is the center of effort of the combined sail plan currently placed?

2) Are the stay locations correct to both support and adjust the rig?

3) Are the stays sized to support the new load factors and angles?

4) What provisions have been made to the Righting Force of the boat to deal with the extra pressure of the rig?

5) Are the spar sections (mast and boom) capable of dealing with the new (increased) load?

I will stay that without someone knowing what they are really doing, its going to be a disaster.

My biggest concern would be reefing. My Hobie 17 had a hook at the top and couldn't be lowered without first pulling it up to unlock. I had the sail modified to be able to be reefed, but because the sail uses a rope in the sail instead of slugs it would pull out of the mast at the top as soon as you reefed and sheeted in the main. Then it was a ***** to get it down at all. That's why it hooked at the top, otherwise it would pull out of the mast. The hook keeps it in. It never reefed.

Yup. Especially your last comment.

I don't think we have enough info... Its obvious in the pic that he has the Hobie 18 spars, but never said if he is using the Hobie 18 sails or the C22 sails.
Since the H18 mast is taller than the C22 he may have cut it to the correct height. I am assuming (if this guy is smarter than he is crazy) he selected the H18 spar because the spar section is similar dimension and wall thickness to the stock C22 spar, and that the C22 main slugs and bolt rope fit the H18 mast track and boom. Its clear in the pic the H18 spreaders are in use, but is the sweep angle, length, and height mounted up the spar different than the C22? From what has been discussed and the info provided by the OP, it does sound like changes had to be made to standing rigging, but to what degree?

Exactly. More info is needed. No point in assuming he just simply used the full hobie mast and patched togther a dog's breakfast.

FWIW: If my mast was damaged and I replaced it with a hobie mast, I'd cut if down to match, and get the geometry the same so I could use the same sails and rigging. Any frugal individual would likely do that same.

As the robot said.. "Morrrrre input"

Looking forward to hear how was the handling and performance. Do take pictures and video so we can see.

Wow... look what the wind blew in... GUYS it was a little over 10 years when i posed this question ... wow little update so i ended up passing on the little catalina and got a 30 o'day own her right up until a lost the mast in a hurricane like 2 years ago and she later sunk that same year.

I was luck to have owned her and we raised out kids up sailing on her and created many memorable moments ... I moved on but who knows in another 10 years I may be back to provide another update...

Visions of a catamaran maybe
