I will be applying interlux interprotect 2000/2001 to my 22 foot sailboat. How much of the 2000/2001 product should I buy to get the 10 mil recommended thickness?

Check the label

for coverage in square feet per coat per gallon. Then measure the length of the area you plan to coat and measure around the bottom from water line to water line convert these measurements to feet and multiply length times girth to get square feet. This measurement will be oversize because your boat is pointy on one end. That's alright you will loose some paint in the tools and you may mix more than you need for each coat and loose some that way. Of course it won't hurt anything to put on an extra coat. edited to add: If you want to get a little closer to actual area, measure the girth at several points and take an average.

Fox, My wife and I performed a bottom job on Aurelia in 1994. We had her peeled and faired by Custom Yacht Service in Irvington, VA. I didn't want any potential for competing chemistry below the waterline, so I paid for 86 man-hours of fairing without the use of fairing compound. We applied two coats of Interprotect 1000, sanding between coats. We then applied seven coats, (14 gallons), of intreprotect 2000 over a two-day period. We use a hard epoxy bottom paint that I sand vigorously each season. The extra layers allow me to sand until I see the barrier coat without worrying about burning through to the laminate. We are stating out 12th season now without blisters. My advice to you is to take the extra afternoon and spent the extra $65 to add a couple of extra coats. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's recommendations about drying time between coats. Good luck. Fair winds, Steve S/V Aurelis

Its been awhile

but I think I used two gallons to do five coats on a Mac22. There is a pretty long window now between layers so there's plenty of time to use one gallon and then buy more unless you are too far from a source.

barrier amount

Steve, I have spent many-many hours sanding and fairing so I want to make sure I apply the right amount of barrier---do not want to do this job ever again. I do not have any marine stores close by so the barrier will be purchased via internet so getting the correct amount is important. How size boat is Aurelis?

You want the right answer?

Write, call or e-mail the manufacturer. They will also probably give you some helpful hints. You found this site on the web, you should be able to find the manufacturers site also.
