Barient 8P winch jamming, pawl problem?

Hello,
I have a Barient 8P winch (Winch Service Manual for Barient No. 8P) that is jamming. I disassembled it, and it seems that the two lower pawls (and springs) can side in and out of the pawl holder (laterally, see blue arrow in photo). The top two pawls are slightly loose but are held in their holders still. I believe it is this movement of the pawl out of the holder jamming the winch. The top and bottom pawls look about the same (no more or less wear), so I believe the bottom pawl holder is worn down and wider than needed.
Anything I can do about this? Some sort of sheath/insert? Or do I have to buy a whole new winch?
Thank you!

What is that white goooo?

Reminds me of that movie "There's something about Mary"

Before I diagnosed any issues, I would totally clean the winch down to the metal. Diesel is a good solvent.

Once clean you can begin to look for wear and damage. The winches were made with a bronze base. You can find replacement pawls and springs in a kit sold under the Lewmar brand.

Very light lubricant on the pawls.

Any marine consignment stores near you? When I lived in Florida there was a great consignment shop near us that had all kinds of neat old hardware. You might find a winch similar to yours.

Hi Lavatiger.
First thing I would check is the pawl springs. Cheap and easy to replace.

Click on the "Four (4) pawls $49;99" box and the next item is "Ten (10) pawl springs $14:49"

In your manual there are pawl (locating/ action) springs. They are 7.
Do you have these?
Are they in good condition?
The bearings should be lightly greased, but you should not use grease in the pawls as it causes them to become sticky.

Wear in the pawl socket usually comes about from a hard life/ racing or lack of lubrication.
It does appear but is not so common.

The old trick for working on winches aboard is to get a decent sized cardbaord box/carton. Cut a hole the size of the winch and lower it over the winch, then disassemble and clean.. This keeps all you parts where you can see them.

Clean them up first and replace the pawl springs and pawls. Mineral spirits is a good cleaner for greasy parts.

Thanks all, the foam was a grease cleaner I found in the bilge from a previous owner.

I replaced the springs. I think the biggest issue is the pawls sliding freely out of the base housing because it is worn out.

Perhaps the pawls are worn out slightly and new ones would be slightly large and fix the issues, I will take ones out of the working winch to test this theory.

is that one of the winches with a plastic drum? Those can expand when the wrong lubricant is used and you have to wet sand the drum to get it to spin freely.

I hope it's only minor stuff. I had to order parts from Australia to repair my 3 Barient winches. 2 plastic parts and a base. At some point it's more practical to get new winches.
