Bad to power up garmin out of water?

As to the power leads there are only two wires in the power cord. they go to your 12v cabin battery. these units don't run on self contained batteries. the other cable goes to the transducer.
I like the way Centerline set up his unit, but these Garmin transducers are so long that I doubt you'd find a piece of pvc suitable. I just played with a piece of 4" pvc, but it couldn't be formed large enough to go over the unit. If I end up mounting mine inside the hull I think I'll cut up one of the containers shown below. lots of different products come it this size and shape from soap to fix-all and plaster products, and it gives plenty of room for the long skinny Garmin transducer.
Centerline: how hot did you have to get the toilet bowl wax to make it flow?

I just loaded it into a clean soup can and placed it on the stove til it melted.... it was too hot to handle without glove. about the same temp as candle wax would be...

long before waterproof leather footwear, my dad used to buy toilet wax to melt and oil his cork boots with it (this will be pronounced "caulked" boots for all you non loggers:biggrin:)
just heat the boots in the oven on 200degrees and when the leather is warm, it will suck the melted wax into it like a sponge.... this made them waterproof for a few weeks,.. and then when they dried out, you could reheat them and it would allow the wax to soak around and make the boots waterproof again

Obviously, in your case anyway, the heated wax wasn't so hot that it harmed the transducer then??

Corks: As a matter of fact I know the guy who invented them back in the early 50s. his son (Doug Smith), who eventually took over the business (Korkers), had the fabrication shop next to my business for many years. originally corks were designed as a sole with the spikes in them that were strapped onto the bottom of your waders for stream fishing, so you don't slip on the mossy rocks. they developed into many other uses and designs over the years, including the logging corks.

no harm... but you do need to let it cool a bit so the transducer sets on top.... you can then either push in into it a little, or pour a bit more around it to secure it into place.....

Pat: Did you click on the image to enlarge it? My hand is much larger than a tin of chew
the container measures 7.5" x 5" on the top to 6.5" x 4.4 on the bottom. 5" deep. the one I have had fastpatch in it, which is a product I used to level subfloor irregularities before installing tile or vinyl etc. but the same container is also used for powdered soaps and other things.
The Garmin transducer measures 6" x 2" BTW.

Russ C..what is the container....like a container you see with mashed potatoes already made?...and I run both wires to the battery directly and the cable to the transducer...? I'm about to get brave.......80 her today....everything is blooming, but they are saying a chance of snow by Friday and then below normal for the next 10-14 days.......how do I get the cable up to the
unit mounted on the steering pedestal? or just come up thru the wheel pedestal and then leapfrog over to the 91/2 inch
pedestal guard? I think I keep asking the same questions....thanks for the help. Pat

Pat. you can't hardly hook up the unit wrong. the Garmin battery cable has a red wire that goes to the + terminal of your house battery and a black wire that goes to - side. the transducer cable has molded on ends and only plugs into the unit one way.
same spring conditions here. warm one day and rain with snow in the mountains the next. over 3 feet of snow up high the past 3-4 days, which means lots of sailing water in the lakes (for a change) this summer. yeeeeha.

I have to ask a question.....what is the purpose of the pvc pipe? In the spot where I am going to put the transducer, it is a
dry space under an access hatch at the aft end of the quarterberth....the space is not wet, but on the centerline, well aft. Could
just secure the transducer to the hull as described above without the pvc pipe....??? thanks for setting me straight. Pat
