We plan on going up the ICW next spring and cruising the Chesapeake for six months or so, before returning to florida next fall. I have 2 old Garmin chart plotters, a fixed 172 and a hand held 76map. Both only have local, west coast data.
I can spend a lot of money on old outdated proprietary chips and disc unlocks or I can get new non garmin chartplotters. (no magnets).
My current plan is a Raymarine A50D for the helm with built in N/C charts.
I saw a nifty demo of an Ipad at the SSCA gam here last week, but I know nothing about apple stuff. In the bad old days when I worked, Corporate IT folks were rabid IBM'ers. Purchase of apple brand stuff was verbotten.
My thought is to replace the 76 map with an I pad non phone, a GPS dongle, low cost chart software and free charts.
Any thoughts? Can I tether an I pad to my phone? download Active Captain? Cruisers Net?
I can't make any sense out of the young people at apple stores, and I just blew away Polar something or other nav software as unintelligble with lousy but fast help. You adults are my last hope.
