Backing plate support for rail stantions

If it is 3/4 inches thick minimum with large fender washers under the nuts.

Generally, fiberglass is a much better idea. Marine Plywood can rot and isn't as good at resisting compression IMHO. Making up fiberglass plates is pretty simple to do.

Thank you MrBee, a very useful phrase. IMHO some kind of hardwood, I am not sure what is available in your area, would do a good job as a backing pad for stanchion bolts, with penny washers as suggested earlier. I use baloo or jarra at least 1/2" thick for this sort of job.
