I'm considering moving up from a C-22 to a C-30 next year. Other than yearly slip fees, can anyone give me a general idea of what type of annual maintenance would be required, and associated costs ? Especially things like haul-outs and bottom painting. The boat will be moored in the Tacoma, WA area. Thanks in advance.

Costs

It depends alot on the condition of the C-30 you purchase. Haul-out is usually around 100 bucks. It really depends on who does it. What you are doing and how much a day the yard charges for dry storage. To paint my C-30 bottom 3 years ago, I was charged 500 bucks. That covered in/out, cost of paint and labor to paint. I intend to paint the bottom myself next time however, I don't think I will bring the cost down considerably considering the rising cost of things these days. Don't forget to check things like the rigging, the condition of the engine, in compartments, condition of hull(cracks, Condition of deck, spreader angles(a flat angle implies a former owner who didn't perform regular maintenance, rigging tension, ect. Often times the person who does the survey on the C-30 will do an inadequet job if you aren't present to ask questions about this or that. Don't settle for generalizations in place of answers to you questions. Good Luck; I love my C-30 sailing her in the South Sound is fantastic!

Hard to answer

That's a very difficult question to answer. Obviously, the larger the boat, the more expense involved in maintaining her. How much that would be is practically impossible to state without more specific info. I'm not sure of exact figures but figure that the C30 has probably twice (at least) as much bottom area as the C22. As soon as you start sanding the bottom of a C30, you'll be dreaming of your C22!! :) LaDonna

Also looking for a C-30

I am trying to find out what were the best years the C-30 was built. Does anyone know which were the best years?

I spend about $2,000/yr on my 1986 28 footer...

that includes 1/2 of $700 for a new bottom job every 2 yrs. Also includes stuff like new batteries, lines, halyards, fenders, engine maintenance, $20/mo for diver to clean bottom, zinc replacement, hoses, pumps...stuff that has to be replaced or maintained. It does not include all the toys we have added or replacement of sails, sail covers or bimini, since these have a much longer life. Add in the slip fees and the rough total is about $350/mo. Sure glad I don't have boat payments and do most of the work myself!
