I have a raymarine st4000 autopilot on a '07 Hunter 33.

It appears the st4000 operates in two speeds. Often it runs only in the slower of two speeds turning the wheel very slowly. It runs so slowly, that in the slow made the boat cannot not successfully tack when using the autotack mode.

The belt is properly tensioned. The batteries are charged, and this occurs even if the engine is running and the alternating creating proper current.

I have changed the sea state mode, and the rudder gain. Rudder gain is set to maximum at the moment, but the setting has no apparent effect on the speed of the operation of the wheel motor.

Any clues on what the problem could be?

Connection

Maybe poor connection do to corrison on a power wire, can you check and see what the motor connection is drawing,I am far from knowing about the operation with electronics and normally call Raymarine tech for help when ever I have a problem and must say they have always been very good at helping me to find what's wrong.

Definitely check the power wires.. The connectors on the back of the control head are known for coming loose. They are tiny spade connectors... pull the power-to-drive wires and replace making sure that the spade goes into the connector and not between the plastic insulator and the connector. The 4 connectors on the back that you want to check carefully are two marked "12V" and the pair marked "Drive" .

The spindle can get bound up with dirt, salt and corrosion and really load the system down. Ensure it spins freely with the motor off-don't let the gears fall out-and the belt untensioned. Spraylubricant as you exercise the spindle and you may be surprised at what comes out. Hope this helps.
