I just purchased a 2001 Hunter 420 Passage with an Autohelm 7000 & ST60 wind, depth, & speed. I have a laptop with Capn Nav software and want as cheap as possible GPS that will interface with both my laptop and seatalk with the Autohelm. Will only Raymarine GPS units 'seatalk' with the autohelm? Thanks!

In A Word, Yes

...if you want full functionality. Otherwise, you can hook up to the autopilot via NEMA interface. That will permit it to follow a track. RD

Not Necessarily So

Guy, I run my Garmin GPS directly into the NMEA port on the Autohelm 7000 control box. It presents the waypoint name and number on the helm display. It also shows distance to the next WP and cross track error. The pilot will take you to the next waypoint and the GPS bleeps when coming close and the Autohelm bleeps when you have reached it. Then you press "Track" and it guides the boat to the next WP on the route set into the GPS. If you can upload your chosen route from your laptop nav program to the GPS, then the boat will comply. It would be dangerous to allow the boat to alter course by itself on reaching a WP so it bleeps to tell you. As far as I can establish all this is identical to working via Seatalk.

Does not do SEATALK for the GPS. NMEA is all you get. At least the Raymarine GPS I bought did not do SEATALK. NMEA works fine. Paul

Garmin 186C

We have the Garmin 186C on our H P42 with the autohelm 7000. Works great and the interface is fine. We also have the Autohelm remote control and all of the important GPS info appears on the remote's screen. No problem.

Raymarine GPS

Paul, All Raymarine GPS units with the exception of the newish 420, 425 & 435 Navionics compatible units will accept NMEA or Seatalk unput. The 400 series accepts only NMEA input and cannot network the screen image with other displays as is possible with RL or C series systems. Jon McClain

SeaTalk to NMEA converter

I just thought I'd throw in that there is a converter box available from Raymarine that converts Seatalk to NMEA and vice versa for about $100. Trevor

Jon, Thanks for your input. I have the 435i. As I understand it, it only has NMEA out which I ran to the ST4000 NMEA in. As you stated, there is no SEA TALK on the 435. I think it is a great unit though.

RayNav 300 to Autohelm 7000

I just bought the 300 GPS for my boat that already has a 7000 autopilot & st60 depth, speed & wind. I will output to by nmea it with a laptop & Capn Nav software. I will also output the 300 to the autohelm 7000 by seatalk. I am trying to decide if I should mount the GPS in the cockpit or nav station. If I can get all of the important info to displayon the 7000 disply, I could just set up the GPS at the Nav station with my laptop and output everything to the Autohelm display. Doea anyone know what will the Autohelm 7000 display from the 300 GPS if I use the seatalk output? thanks!

GPS at Helm

I don't under stand why you would want gps at the navstation,I have my gps at the helm right where it is needed,I see everything while we are sailing or motoring.

Nick has a point

You see instruments (gps, radar, e-chart) mounted at the nav station, on the bulkhead, and at the wheel. If mounted on the nav station, they are safer from theft and weather, but of course, not as accessible for immediate use. On the bulkhead is not common. I guess easier to mount and when theres only a tiller its your only choice. At the helm, its immediately accessible but exposed to weather and an easier theft opportnity. Seem like they would be easier to break also. Most seem complex to operated (multiple button combinations, track balls, etc) meaning that they requre an additional had to operate. Also, they present a lot of info in a variety of formats that must be interpretd and mentally combined. Meanwhile your suppose to be sailing the boat. Right? Markdb

gps at both locations...

If I understand the system correctly, this is what I'm trying to confirm here, I can mount the GPS at the Nav desk where I interface with my laptop and intput/edit/etc waypoints, but it will output most of that data to the screen for my autohelm 7000 autopilot. I would do all of the work below, but I think the autohelm 7000 will display the waypoint info at the helm. I am trying to confirm this works, and if it does, what actually displays at the 7000.
