All you H33 owners with autohelm 4000 .Where did you put the fluxgate?

Just an idea

I pondered this question as well on my H-37 Cutter. I placed mine under the sink on the panel that was closest to the centerline of the boat, about 1 foot above the floor. The sink is stainless steel. The only problem might be the proximity of the H2O pump, which contains permanent magnets. After performing the fluxgate compass alignment procedures in the manual for the ST 4000, I found very little error and this location works quite well for me. Perhaps this might help you, but I am unfamiliar with your layout. Good luck Will! Eric Nelson

under nav station on a 37

On my 37 cutter the previous owner had it installed underneath the nav station, about six inches above the floor and about one foot from the centerline of the boat. The nav station on the 37 is on the port side opposite the leading edge of the gally to starboard. No metal problems that I am aware of, and it worked fine (until the clutch lever broke recently). Anyone know how to repair/replace the clutch lever?Sanders s/s Good News

Fluxgate location

In the front of the bilge, just under the cabin sole. Had to make a small filler block to give it something flat to attach to. Originally it was in the aft end of the bilge, but had to move it. I thought mine was okay in its first location until the bilge pump kicked on the first time, and the boat took an immediate 90 degree turn to starboard. Very exciting. Sooo ... if you mount your fluxgate in the bilge, stay away from the pump itself. To test your proposed location, turn the power to the autohelm on and move the fluxgate forward and aft in the bilge while someone watches the fluxgate display on the control head. Try not to rotate the compass too much so the heading stays relatively stable. If you get too close to the pump, the display will begin to change rapidly. Now attach the compass in its proposed location temporarily, then turn on the bilge pump and watch the display. If it doesn't change, you're far enough away.

On my H33....

I put mine on the aft most "wall" of the aft storage bin under the starboard setee. If you go for this location, remember to keep magnetic sources out of the storage bin and the drawers. Raytheon suggests (and I agree) a minimal distance of three to four feet from any possible disturbance source.

ray 4000 fluxgate

after several tries we mounted the fluxgate under the nav station-portside, forward of the head. you want the fluxgate as low as possible in the hull, as near to amidships/centerline as possible-but away from all magnetic materials-be aware that even stainless can be somewhat magnetic, and that pumps have magnets in them!-avoid the keelbolts, bilge pumps, etc, as well as the engine. In our case, the popular location under the aft cockpit deck didn't work because the 356 has a large draglink from the pedastal to the rudder
