I'm looking aat the Simrad Tiller PIlot 10 as a possibility for my 1993 Hunter 23.5. Does anyone have any experience with the unit or any other they can reconmmend that will not require me to take a second mortgage on my home. Thanks Hayden

Tiller auto pilot

My folks had apartments on St Louis ave two blocks north of the old bridge when Ocean City was a quant little town. I haven't been back there in 30 years but am going thru in may on my way back to CA. I have the auto pilot you asked about on my O'Day 26'. It works great, I woudn't do with out it ,very reliable. Just make sure you use good quality wire to the fitting for the unit and it gets the proper voltage and amps. Use a good quality water tight receptacle deck connection. Something with a water tight cover when the unit is disconected. It is a good basic unit with no remote, all you need.

I agree

I have one on an O'Day 27 -- it gives all the power I need -- it's way under $300 -- & it's an absolute must for cruising, particularly for times under power. Good luck

Autohelm 1000

Last year I upgraded to an AH-2000+ so I could interface my autopilot to my computer and GPS. So now I have a used AH-1000 with a set of new connectors that I would sell for $250.00 plus shipping. The AH-1000 has a quicker response time, and more power than the simrad 10

I'd suggest you grab Steve's 1000+...

Hayden, I had such a series of disappointing experiences with Simrad's (aka: Navico's) products and people that I would be reluctant to recommend their a/p's to anyone. Coincidentally, I just bought a new 1000+ to use with my wind vane (Steve, where were you when I needed you...!<g>) and I am impressed with the wiring, overall construction, and provided deck connection. My wife made a cover for it (your sailmaker or canvas person could do the same thing; includes a clear plastic window to view the LCD panel and buttons) which I'm convinced will extend its life many times over - weather and sun are what seem to kill these units first. And my 1000+ will handle in/output of NMEA data, so perhaps it's a later model than Steve's. Anyway, the point of the post is to say the 1000+ looks like good gear to me. Good luck on your decision! Regardless of the unit you select

Make sure your sails are properly trimmed so that the tiller load is as light as possible. Otherwise the tillerpilot will draw a LOT of power fighting the tiller. I blew a bunch of fuses and even melted some of the insulation on the wiring before I realized my mistake. I had become dissillusioned with my ST100+ and its advertised claim to handle a boat up to 10,000 lb displacement (my H23 displaces about 3,200 lb when fully loaded) until I took a hard look at my sail trim. Good luck. Peter H23 "Raven"
