I'm in the process of buying a new asymetrical spinnaker and need advice about size. I'm considering two off the shelf sizes from North, one has a 36' luff, the other a 42' luff.(549 sq/ft, & 710 sq/ft) My I=39.5' and J=10.83'. I will be using it on the Gulf coast and want as much performance as I can get, but don't want a light air "only" sail. My question is will the 42' luff be too ungaingly and hard to handle? I haven't seen and rules of thumb for actual size selection. Anyone got experience with asymetricals with longer luffs than their mast height? I am leaning toward the larger size in order to use it in the Wednesday afternoon races and beat that damd Hunter-26 that's been plaguing me.
