Well it was a success. ArriveCAN app was all filled out and submitted the morning of. The only issue was they wanted a street number for the visit so I put the marina in Ganges. Went into Bedwell to use the phones. There were three people on the three phones when I walked up. One was talking to someone and the other two were on hold. They said it has been averaging 30 minutes on hold. Another guy can up and asked about the number on the sign. Turns out you can call the 1800 from your boat ( didn’t see it posted anywhere on the website) and do not have to go to shore. A bunch of typical questions taking about 10 minutes and they give you a code. Then your done.

Returning was a little more cumbersome. I had data service outside of Stuart Island but once inside Provost I didn’t so I have to weigh anchor and head back out again. The ROAM app was ok with the exception that it doesn’t promptyou to add addition persons on the boat into the system and when it askes for a picture of each, it doesn’t mean a actual picture, it wants a picture of ID. The customs agent was super cool. For some reason the video chat on my phone did work but we chatted for about 10 minutes on all things not associated with crossing a boarder and he cut me loose. Nice guy.

Glad your entry across the Northern border went smooth. Yes the 1800 number is an option rather than the physical phone at the Telephone Reporting Centre. But it is my understanding that you still are required to dock at a marine reporting site.
Pat’s Boating - Entering Canada
I just returned Sunday from a month in the Puget Sound area. Crossing the US border could not have been easier using the ROAM app. I was even able to apply and receive my cruising license for the next year all completed in under 5 minutes and no charge.

Possibly but the customs agent asked me where I was making landfall which makes me believe it isn’t a issue. There were about 4 people on the dock on there personal phones calling in once the first guy got through. I was already in line for the next hardline phone so I did both. It was the same recordings and system so I passed the hardline off to the next guy. I think the system is so under staffed that they are a little lax when you have everything lined up right.

The sittes that I have used, Tsehum Harbour and Sidney Marina - British Columbia Canada both have video cameras. I believe they know you are at the dock if they want to look.

Len, happy you enjoyed your cruise south of the border.

It is nice and easy on the soul when the crossings lack drama.

Is it possible that they just want you to be "near" a reporting site, in case they decide that you need to clear in person? The last time that I crossed, I called in too early. I told the agent on the phone where I intended to end the day, which is not a reporting site, which he knew, but when I asked where I could reroute to (an authorized reporting location), he had no idea where I should go. I started reading off the names from my chart plotter until one of them sounded familiar to him. When I called back in, I managed to connect with the same agent, and after answering his questions he told me that I was welcome to head off to anywhere that I wanted to go.

I believe this is the case. I could have saved about 1,5 hours not motoring into Bedwell and just staying out in the straight and called. If they wanted me to go in the. No problem. If not then that’s time and fuel saved. The customs building at Bedwell wasn’t open went I went in.
