The bolt broke that holds the alternator bracket in place. I see from the archives that it is a common problem on 85,86 M-25 engines. Mine is an 1986 M-18. I was wondering if the upgrade alt bracket kit for the m-25 would also fit the M-18? From the pictures in the archives it sure looks the same. I need to back the broken bolt from the manifold this morning and as a temporary fix I would replace the bolt with another. Is there any metal issues between a new bolt and the engine manifold on the short term? Can I simply match the bolt with one from Home Depot until the kit arrives or can I cause some type of metal on metal issues with a cheap Home Depot bolt? as always, "THANKS" jack

Bolt

i would think a Home Depot bolt will work just fine in the engine compartment.

What is the time window involved? What ever you use for a bolt

put anti-seize compound on it. Check to be sure if the thread is national or metric. you don't want to try mixing.

Any bolt will do

for that application, although your ACE Hardware store should have a stainless steel bolt collection, so use that material until you get the replacement. If it's the stud, not a bolt, through the manifold, it could be a metric thread. The link is to the alternator bracket replacement. You have to ask yourself if it's worth it to you. Check out www.marinedieseldirect.com to see if they are the same - you can answer your own question with a little research on your own.

Do not use Home Depot /Lowes/Ace

As a temporary fix OK, until you get a good replacement from a real hardware or marine store. These chains buy on price only to meet their untested standards. An example I have are stainless steel clamps. You would think, well it's stainless, what the hay! A few years ago in repairing my lift muffler for my 1986 Catalina 30. Thought I should replace the stainless clamps on all the fittings. The old ones were dirty, went to Home Depot and bought new ones. Clean the old ones off as spares. A year later, when I commissioned the boat in spring, all of the Chinese crap Home Depot stainless clamps were rusted. Went to West marine and bought new clamps. The clamps that were on my boat since 1986 had no corrosion. Same goes for bolts. There are different grades of metal and chain store i suspect barly meet these standards, if at all. By the way my mount also broke on my m25. Replace it. See pics on link below. Good Luck!

Bolt

I forgot. Stainless steel bolts I don't think should be used on the engine. Stainless is a weak metal and the vibration will break it. Also dissimilar metals will cause corrosion. Stainless or not! Good luck! SH

Go ahead and get it wherever you can but

ask for a grade 8 machine screw (A bolt is tightened from the nut end but a machine screw is tightened from the head end). The grade 8's have 6 (I think) lines on the head and higher strength than the normally used grade 5's. All screw and bolt suppliers should be able to get them. Remember that if you over torque your machine screw and it doesn't break, that the threads in the head might.
