Are Projects More Complicated Or Are We Getting Older?

Rich, I was responding to pateco's post (#38). Since he has bypassed it and not used it for a year, I assumed it was inoperative and he was done with it. Druid is, I believe, working on an install (post #37).

Pateco - I feel your pain. HMT2 told me the other day on the phone that I was going to have to take part of a (forward) galley cabinet out to redo the galley sole. I can't imagine taking out the sink side cabinet to remove the WH if it gives up the ghost.

It will fit where I thought it would go, but it won't fit through the cockpit locker opening!
Ha! I felt like such a dumb ass when I realized the same thing. (When I first told the marina owner where I was planning to put it, he said "does it fit through the locker?" ... "sure" I replied ) I was going to return it, but the rectangular tank that would fit through the opening was smaller and more expensive, so I didn't like that option, either. I finally settled on installing it on the floor of the quarter berth, under the cockpit, where it fits snugly and gives me easy access to the fittings. I'll just have to make better use of the lazerette and give up the space in the quarter berth that I really don't use otherwise, except to stuff cushions.

Concerning the inoperative HW tank: One reason I'm installing one is to act as a surge tank: currently the pressure pump cycles when I turn on the tap. I'm pretty sure the HW tank will work great as a surge tank. If you take yours out, you may find you need a surge tank to keep the pressure pump from cycling.

druid - is a surge tank the same thing as an accumulator? Do they serve the same purpose?

To keep the pump from cycling, you need to push a diaphram against air. HW tank will not act as an accumulator

The HW heater has some trapped air above the outlet fitting that compresses. Mine will pump hot water for a little while even with the pump shit off. Depends on brand for sure.

You guys talking about fitting old WH thru the hatch had me scared to progress for too long. Finally prioritized the WH replacement so I can remove the box with new WH sharing my head. Hooray. The WH fits with an inch to spare. Sunday afternoon or maybe Monday (if I use Druid's work model) I will replace the WH. Hope I have the right pipe connections...:yikes:

My slide rule is stuck in my pocket protector. Do you think if I unclip my calculator from my belt I can use it instead?

My father had a sliderule from his college days. It never made any sense to me how it worked. But he always came up with the correct answer.

Kermit, I HAVE a slide rule from my college days! I was in the last engineering class at Iowa State to take the mandatory slide rule class for freshman. The next year, the mandatory class was for using calculators. Of course we were already using an HP35 by then.

Yes, my first calculator in high school was TI (cheap) but the cool kids in college all preferred HP.

I never was very good with a standard slide rule. Couldn't keep the slide in the rule. One day during my freshman year in 1970, I noticed the book store had on offer a circular slide rule. I liked the banana yellow color. Resonated with me. I think it finally went missing about a decade ago. I don't remember ever encountering another student in any of my calculus, physics, geology and chemistry classes using a circular slide rule. Odd man out. I recall the rough part of slide rule technique was keeping track of the decimal place location.

Curious, I looked today on eBay and sure enough someone has my circular slide rule model for sale. Alas, no interest now.

I also liked the circular rule. You couldn't fall off the end of the scales and since it was made of metal it could take
lots of abuse.

I've never even heard of a circular sliderule. But I have been accused of circular reasoning.

I had a plastic circular slide rule. It had an insert that had the periodic table on one side and a bunch of scientific formulas on the other side. If I had it now, it would be on Ebay for mucho buckos.
