It s a ballet

Hi, G. Bean, What a agreat picture! Contrary to the idea that racers are testosterone filled type A, I think at high level it has to become like a ballet, every move is to be well coordinated in order 1, not to break the boat, 2 not to injure a crew mate. If you are not at that level I don't think you should make the team. After all you are working with extreme loads and on the edge of what a boat can take. When you are racing there is a process of natural elimination that occur, if one doesn't know what he is doing he will not last. Now I do not want to insinuate that all cruisers are not skilled etc. but I do regret that anyone can buy a boat and go boating (this include powerboats). I think for sailboats, racing should be mandatory for, say 2 summers; it is the best way to acquire skills and learn the rules of the road. As for the Power boaters one should not be allowed to put a licence number or registration number on the bow before actually getting a licence stating they can drive the boat! My 2ø a.

correction

... Sorry this is not directed at anyone in particular and should read something like. ...If one is not at that level I don't think one should make the team... etc. Instead of ...If you are not at that level I don't think you should make the team. Cheers, a

No I was too busy with the spinnaker set. :) 91 mph is a bunch! Things here didn't get quite as strong as predicted. I think Smith Island peaked out at 48 knots --all in all a very blowy day. Gary Wyngarden S/V Wanderlust h37.5

Gary, I appreciate the invitation, but....

.... you know, there's an old German saying: "Soo soon ve get alt und soo soon ve get schmart", or something like that. Saw it in a Hofbrau in San Jose years ago. A few years ago I might have taken you up on it. I have flown our symetrical chute on our HL-35 double-handed whith wife (which is kinda like sailing single handed ;) ) while doing 10kts boat speed though, and more than once. Don't think I'd do it anymore, or maybe if conditions were just right.... What's life without a little excitement?
