My C30 is an '88 model and I was wondering what the reliability factor is with the muffler. How often should it be inspected internally? Is there a warning before it fails? What are the consequences should it fail?

muff it

Chris; the muffler is very reliable. what you may have trouble with is the exhaust pipe. if you're in doubt, remove the packing and inspect it. if you see rust, wire brush it off. if the pipe seems in good shape, with no holes or excessive amounts of rust, re-wrap it and you're good to go.

Muffler

Chris, I still have the original Muffler on my 79 C30. All it is is a plastic can that fills with water and muffles the noise. If it is not cracked or leaking or clogged there is nothing you need to do with it. Mine had a crack in the top of it when I purchased my boat so it leaked a little water. I have repaired the crack with epoxy and have had no problems since. Happy sailing (and motoring)

Some issues- from memory.

There have been enough problems with them cracking to have generated several discussions on the C-320 list (you may want to do an archive search). Reports seem to be evenly divided as to whether you can successfully repair them. So, that may be a technique issue. I seem to recall that some believe that stress from the manner in which it is mounted may be a major contributing factor in the cracking. So far, I only recall comments on minor water leaks as a result of this issue.

Problem is cracking from vibration

The Aqua-Lift seems to rarely fail internally but often cracks at the inlet becasue it is a rigid mount and the hose is atached to the engine which flexes and vibrates and stresses the connection. My 85 had about 2 inches of epoxyon it when I purchased it and I just replaced the Aqua-Lift because it was still leaking and the drain screw was corroded shut. A new one from Catalina ran about $225 and another $200 for profesional installation. I added a hump hose from Catalina Direct to absorb some fo the vibration but you need to cut the hose to make it much shorter than it comes from Catalina Direct.
