The US Mint recognizes the beauty and wonder of the Apostle Islands, and commemorates it with its very own quarter that will be released in April. Devils Island. Too bad a kayak and not a sailboat. But how cool!

I've seen and heard a lot of programs featuring our national parks lately. New marketing initiatives? I approve of that except having more people in the places I visit. Let's keep them to a minimum. Support without use. Except for me, of course.

Gee, that seems to be the sentiment about every nice place we visit.

100 miles north of the Apostle Islands is the country's least visited National Park, Isle Royale. Mostly due to its isolation in the middle of Lake Superior, you have to get the by boat or ski plane. The NP runs boats out of Minnesota or Michigan to get there, but by far the best way it to take you own sailboat over.

Would be a wonderful trip, but a long one as well. Superior can be right nasty and always cold! We have done the South end of Lake Michigan to South end of Lake Huron when we bought the Sapphire would love to venture into Superior in the future.

A write-up in SAIL about a lower-lakes boat venturing up to Superior and Isle Royale. Because of the geologic makeup of the Island, the many bays has a fjord-like quality to them, long and narrow. And he's right about Chippewa Harbor. Magical.

Thanks for posting that article @Jackdaw makes me want to plan a trip for next year. The writings are almost poetic.
Yea, easy to wax lyrical about the place. Bucket list trip for sure. The fact that its not super easy to get to makes it more so.

Great article Jackdaw in Sail about Lake Superior. The author made the experience come alive.
Thanks.

I did an outfitted (3) day Kayak trip in Superior a couple of years ago along Pictured Rocks, the paddle back the last day was enduring as the sea's were about 2' with no escape along the cliffs. I was looking up at the top of the cliffs, with all the loose rock and shale, I didn't want to stay close to the base of the cliffs, you would never know what hit you if anything was to dislodge. There were a couple of places where the reflection of the waves off the cliffs would really make the Kayak feel completely unstable, 18' sea kayaks are tippy feeling to begin with, then try and paddle in a washing machine! AH memorable moments are what define us........

There has been a HUGE increase in the number of kayaks you see on Lake Superior, mostly due to their ability to get close to the sea caves and cliffs. And of course they are all over the place now on Isle Royale, and all the ferry boats will bring them over for you.

There have been at least two documented cases of people kayaking from Isle Royale to Houghton, an open water trip of over 60 miles. I'm not sure I'd ever do it, a slight change in the actual vs forecast weather and you get something like this on the passage. Ten foot short period waves.

I just pulled out 3 quarters in my pocket featuring Arkansas, Connecticut, Rhode Island. I've often thought about making a collection to see if I can find one for each state. My interest is renewed. Now, my attention is drawn to the America the Beautiful collection. A new goal! A loon is featured in Voyageurs N.P. in Minnesota.
Has anybody collected all these quarters?

Not yet, the MN and MI based ones are coming out in 2018. One for Pictured Rock too! We're going to embed some of the AI quarters into our WYC trophys next year.
