Ah yes. South end of Devils. Anchor graveyard. Beware! Here we approach. Flat water. Trip line ready.

Friends at the dock with a chrysler 22. Keel up only 2 foot draw. Kestrel with 7.25 needs to stand clear.

Why an anchor graveyard...?

Yea. MOST anchorages in the AI are nice sand bottom. The small harbor at the S end of Devil's is shoal, and has a large nasty rock in the middle of the entrance. Sadly the area around the entrance (15-25 feet of water) is strewn with the same manner of large boulders, I'm talking 10 feet across. Easy to wedge your anchor between them. A trip line attached to the back out your anchor (with a small float on the other end) allows you a good chance of safe retrieval as you can pull it up from behind.

Squidd-
Like Jackdaw said most of the AI anchorages have nice sandy bottoms. Devil's Island is a tricky place and I am VERY hesitant about putting an anchor down there, especially at the north end. What BB is referring to is the time when Emmanuel was out on charter a couple years ago the charter people put the anchor down and of course could not get it back on board. They ended up cutting it loose and did not even tie a spare fender to the rode so it could be found again.:cussing: In the process (even though they never admitted it) of trying to break it free they broke my steering quadrant. Since BB was in Bayfield at the time he was nice enough to call and break the bad news to me. Anyway, I had to pay for the new steering quadrant ($1600) and the charter company bought me a new anchor ($300). This is why Emmanuel will not be in charter any more and why my original bruce is resting in about 16 feet of water off Devil's Island.

Sorry for the rant.

Here's a bump for the AI thread. Video from last summer. North of Devil's heading NW, beating into a 18knots of westerly. Waves 5 feet. Noramlly Kestrel plows right through these, but every now than then the spacing is off and she pounds into one. Like at 1:49 seconds.

Jackdaw-
Excellent video! Do you have a rail mounted video camera? I would love to hear about your setup as I do all my video by hand.

GoPro ...

It's the rage! Where it on your helmut or your skis, mount it to your rail or whatever ...

http://gopro.com

It's the new must-have toy for extreme athletes of all kinds.

I was impressed by the stability of the boat's heading and angle of heel throughout the 4 minutes or so of sailing in winds at greater than 15 Knots. I didn't see any sail trim adjustment or heading adjustment or change in heel during the entire time.

We normally have so many wind veers, gusts and other obstacles (like shoreline) that it is virtually impossible to sail like that for any 5-minute stretch at windspeed that generates hull speed. It must be nice!

Princess, like Scott said, it a GoPro HeroHD. It perfect for sailing because

1) Totally waterproof (submersible, see vid below)
2) 170 degree field of view
3) All sorts of mounting options

That video was taken using a bike handlebar mount that I have clipped to our flag pole. Its great because it is far back and catches the entire boat. But I gotta clip down the flag so you don't hear the racket in the video.

I also have a head mount and chest mount, and clip mounts fastened to the boat. You can leave the mounts in place, and move the camera around. We mounted it on the boom once as a test, the video was pretty cool.

The camera is armored and mounts are designed for pretty serious action, so you don't need to worry about the camera. They also make an orange 'floatie' back for it, so if it does end up in the drink, you have a fighting chance of saving it.

You can throw a 16G card in the thing and capture a day worth of sailing. We leave it on for races and watch it later as a crew.

I now suck the video straight into my ipad and edit it in iMovieHD.

The underwater aspect as other interesting uses. On the new boat, we need to clean the bottom from the deck and wanted to see how we were doing. Getting there, next up that keel..

And they make GREAT ways to film inside a boat, due to the 170 degree angle. Here our 260 looks as big at the 367...

Downsides? a few.

1) The wide angle distorts the height and length of things. Like in the first video.

2) The menu on the thing is hard to use, but the new HD2 sorts that out.

3) Get an extra battery and a charger.

Come over in the Spring and we'll give you the full demo!

POTL ... perfect for you!

Wear it in a headress during belly-dancing shows and check out the crowd reaction afterwards! :)

Scott, the boat is really dialed in there in that vid. We had the main is really flat, and the traveler is out about 80% to control the extra lift. Rigged like that, I can deal with small-mid puffs with the helm. It does not take much as you can see, the rudder is never more than maybe 8 degrees off the center-line and most of the time the tape is straight up. If we were racing, we would have dealt with the puffs on the traveler. But as it was a weekend sail, we were just having fun so we took it easy. Over 7 foot of keel helps too.

Having 100 miles of open water in front of us helped; I just steered to the wind.. ;^)

Jackdaw-I really like this idea. I would love the demo so I'll be looking for you come spring. I checked out some of your other vids on youtube and really enjoyed them. I wanted to mention I don't know if you got the boat naming ceremony thing right so I might have to help you redo that when the weather gets warmer....
