Has anyone used a product called Propshield on the prop and shaft while the boat is in upper Chesapeake Bay (i.e. north of the Patuxent River). If so, how did it work? Their add sounds good, but is this just another snake oil? Dave

this is a recurring question

Ariel Apparently their advertizing has gotten around quite well as I've noticed a number of people asking the same question. Unless someone new pops up, you might have the test boat. I know you understand that results can vary depending on location but if this is of any help. I know a few people including myself who have had good results with Petit Zinc Coat Barnacle Barrier paint here in the New England area.

Lanolin

While I haven't used it I have heard that lanolin, it's main ingredient, will help retard growth.

Over the course of several years many products have come and gone from

the market place. Don't you think that the people that came before us tried all of these things.

Petit Zinc-Rich Barnacle Barrier .....

have been using Petit Zinc Rich Barnacle Barrier now for several seasons on the Upper Chesapeake. Where my dock mates all have had great 'barnacle balls' on their props, Ive only had one or two barnacles. Peitit also adheres well in comparison to most other coatings which tend to quickly abrade away especially at the trailing edges. I put on over 1500 nMi last season and had only one barnacle (on a seizing/lock wire). Lanolin or vaseline quickly washes away. Most paints abrade from the fast spinning prop. Desitin baby ass cream washes away. Putting oxy-tetracycline into the bottom paint applied to the prop - leaches out /dissolves too fast when the prop is spinning). For me the choice is either to forego the zinc (and allow a little bit of electrolysis which prevents barnacles) or apply the Petit. I have a ~$$$$ Max-prop, so that isnt a choice.

Looks legitimate

The use of lanolin based products appears to be legitimate. Here's a link to a hardware mfg. that also sells a lanolin based product. You can read all the benefits on a couple of their pages. Hard to believe someone who makes thier living from hardware would invest in a "snake oil "product if it didn't work. http://www.anzor.co.nz/?t=156

Lanolin can be purchased in any pharmacy

as can zinc oxide. Then it is just a matter of blending the two in a pot over a hot water bath. When last I bought lanolin it was about 6 dollars per pound in pharmacy grade anhydrous. A little goes a long way.

Go to a slaughterhouse that 'does' sheep ....

... you can get all the lanolin you want for about $2 per bucket-full.

Propshield

Thanks guys, I have used Petit zinc coating for several years with good success. This winter I have the Maxprop off for service and since it is back to its beautiful shine, I was thinking of trying something else to keep growth down. I like to try new things. This is probably not a good year for me to experiment if it is not a known product as plans are to cruise New England this summer. The different waters and the amount of engine time will be great. This is not condusive to measuring the performance of any coating. Two years ago we did New England and the zinc coating did excellent. There was no growth when we got back to the Chesapeake. Last season we did not leave the bay and had growth, but no where near as much as other boats with no coating. If we do not hear that Propshield works, then the zinc will go back on. Over the years we have tried all the fads with no real success (except zinc). The only things that have had any measure of success has been waxing the bare prop with a good German carnauba car wax, and the next year tried a coating of Lanacoat(sp?). Both of these periods were when we were on the Gulf coast with very warm water and lots of engine time. Last season, boats in the upper bay that used Prop Speed did excellent. I was hoping that maybe Propshield would be like it but less expensive and less labor intensive. Its interesting that the two products now emerging are both from England and both are lanolin based. Is it because they have an abundance of sheep there?

Use prevents growth!!!

The more a prop is used the less stuff will grow. Things grow mostly while the boat is sitting idle. I wonder if copper foil around the blades would work?? Just plain pure copper. Maybe solder it in place.
