Anyone used a Winchrite?

Been thinking about picking up a pre owned one. Seems like a reasonable alternative to installing an electric winch. Wife's about 95lbs soaking wet and isn't fond of raising the main...
Thoughts?

It has been covered before, so do a search on these forums.

Why don't you let your wife steer and you raise the main?
I don't have any personal experience with the WinchRite but reducing friction on the main slugs or bolt rope will help. The cheap method would be to spray them with McLube or other dry silicon lubricant and see if that helps. Another option to reduce friction is the Tides Marine Sail Track & Slide System. I have a friend that had a WinchRite and he liked it, however he said it was slower than expected when heavily loaded.

the winchrite works well, but check carefully - some of the earlier units had battery issues and wouldn't hold a charge

I would suggest using a Milwaukee cordless drill with the bit made for winches. I seem to recall several posters having had problems the durability of the winchrite. Besides the drill can be used to well....drill too.

We have a WinchRite for my wife's use, and we are very happy with it. The WR is compact, and enclosed in a durable plastic case which won't scratch, chip or dent your boat deck or brightwork.

A couple of things to keep in mind:

It has considerable torque, and you need to be prepared to hold it with the same force required to turn a winch handle, and

Any kind of aid like the WinchRite, a Milwaukee driver, or an electric winch can potentially camouflage when something jams and you should to stop winching. You need to stay vigilant when using them, to make sure halyards aren't wrapped, etc.

We certainly wouldn't discourage someone from considering a WinchRite.

1st gen winchrite was not so hot. we love our 2nd gen winchrite.

Older milwaukee 28v rite angle drill was heavy and the charge didnt last long. there is a new milwaukee that I hear is much better
