i opened my mouth on the "rigging advice" thread and someone will probably step in it but, it brings up a question, and quandry that i am in on my rigging. right now i use a downhaul on my h23 and like the simplicity and reliability of it. i am looking at rerigging my boat this winter and don't know if i want the extra complication of roller furling but have seen a double forestay rig that looks interesting. double stays using 2 triangular plates, (one plate at the mast end and 1+ 2 turnbuckles at the chainplate/deck end so tension can be individually adjusted), ....not for strength but to be able to sail wing & wing with 2 headsails or to be able to hank on another sail while the jib is still in place and then drop the jib, (genoa or whatever). any experience or advice with such a rig?

double forestay...

My neighbor's Columbia 26 has a double forestay rig. It was (and still is) a pretty common setup for cruising yachts that want the security of hank on sails along with ability to set two headsails at the same time.

better option?

On a boat your size, a better option might be a two-track foil plus another halyard. A solient stay doesn't make much sense for boats under 45 feet because of all the added weight and windage.

When the

furler cable broke at the top feral swage, if I hadn'd had the second forestay the mast would have collasped backward with who knows what colladeral damage. Now I wouldn't be without it, even if I never used it to hank on 2nd jib.

Headstay Insurance?

Seems like the top of a roller furler might be difficult to inspect as often as needed, but I don't se why you couldn't just add a second Genoa halyard (most masts easily are set-up for two) and fasten it off at the bow pulpit. It will save you from a catastrophic rig failure and can be used for other things like rigging a bosuns chair to go up the mast.
