I'm looking for details from those with experience on how to raise and lower the C30 mast by myself.

On your own or...

or with the help of a mast crane??? I handled the mast of C25 with a helper...but I can't imagine stepping the mast of my C30 without a crane...it takes three guys to carry this thing! (Without breaking your back and steroids). So is your plan with or without a crane? Cheers, G

This is not a C25

I lowered and raised a mast on an O'Day 23 with some friends, however a C30 is a new ball game. I paid my yard close to $800 to remove and reinstall my mast last year, and it was worth every penny. Allow me to explain further. I was not present when the mast was lowered, but I wanted to be there when they lowered it back into place. The entire procedure took around 90 minutes, and four men (with me helping 5) to complete the job. At times it looked like a "chinese fire drill". Granted this yard did not do a ton of sailboat masts, but it was a tough job. The Travel Lift was equipped with the appropriate crane, but with the radar dome, and all the wires that needed to be re-connected at the base of the mast it was tough work. At one point I yelled to the yard owner (who was working the crane) that god might strike me down for saying this, but he earned every penny for this particular job. Of course the $500.0 to paint my bottom was a total rip off, but this was real work and a huge liability for the yard. I hopefully have made my point that this is a job for a professional, with the right equipment. I do not plan on taking the mast down every year, but last year was an opportunity to get some much needed work completed. Good luck.

Not impossible

I've had the mast stepped every year for the last 3 years. I'm saving a couple of hundred by having the boat hauled and stored on my property. The hauler charges $195 each time and I'm always the 3rd man on the team. It really isn't that complicated of a job and usually takes less than 1/2 hour. They have a block and tackle setup on the travel lift. I've stepped numerous mast's on 21 - 25 footers. I've seen pictures and diagrams of guys using a tabernacle rig on a C30. It looks doable and would save me $400/yr. Anyone familiar with this type of setup on a C30?

Mast Stepper

Our club has a 'mast stepper' that was created/installed many years ago. Basically it is a mast and boom operated by block and tackle and a hand winch used to raise and lower masts. I have always done my own stepping and unstepping on my prior boat and my current Catalina 30. Takes about 1/2 hour.

c30 mast step

I stepped my mast last December. It really was not that difficult. Our club has a hoist which was tall enough to run a loop under the spreaders and then lift it up. You just have to be careful controlling the base of the mast when lifted. I agree it takes about 1/2 hour to do.
