An unsolicited email from Aurora Marine Club? Sure would like to know from where or how they got my email address.

Me too

I get a bunch of them, all unsolicited. Based on the addresses they're using I think they used a crawler. For $30 you can get shareware that harvests email addresses from any web site you point it at.

How does a crawler work, in general? It seems email addresses, where kept as a database, would be secured on most commercial sites. I know it seems naive on my part, but how is it not only possible, but apparently easy?

db's are usually OK, it's the web pages

It's rare that a database is hacked (and never for email addresses, they don't have enough value). The problem comes when your address is displayed in an html page, ie., you put it in a forum post, a guestbook message, a classified ad, something that hsows up on a page. The crawler crawls html pages and records anything in the format username@domain.com. The good ones let you point it at a Google search term and crawl all the sites that come up in the results. Sick, eh?
