Great opportunities

Welcome to the area. There are three great alternatives on the Texas side of Texoma. Cedar Mills on the west end, Highport in the middle, and Grandpappy Point at the east end. Each has its strengths. shoot me an email offline at locatejoeh@aol.com for more.

You'll love Lake Texoma

Welcome to Dallas! We have a Catalina 30 at Little Mineral Marina, across the creek from Granpappy. I'm paying $192/month, for a 35' slip. Cedar Mills has probably the best Marina on the lake, but it is in a poor location---lot's of shallow water. Granpappy is near the main part of the lake, with lot's of open water, but they have poorly maintained slips. I'm across the creek from Granpappy, and we have the same issues, since Little Mineral is owned by the same people. We still prefer this end of the lake--better sailing opportunities, more restaurants available, etc. We even have a West Marine located in Denison--just 15 or 20 minutes away. Lot's of used boats available at Granpappy and Cedar Mills. Email me if you have any questions at esquaredtexas@tx.rr.com

How big?

Just how big is Lake Texoma? I come to the Dallas area at least once a year for business, and I always mean to get to the lake but somehow it just doesn't work out. I've seen Joe Pool Lake, and Lake Grapevine on the map, but have yet to get to Texoma. I love Texas, and when retirement time comes (soon) we will probably be looking to relocate. Living on Long Island, we have lots of water....I'm just afraid of getting that land-locked feeling if I'm not on salt water (sorry Great Lakes sailors - too cold there for me!). Of course, there's always the Gulf.

Hey Gregg

Check out the south Texas areas. South of Corpus is pretty nice, and on salt water. You will find the lifestyle much slower, and the cost of living much less than you are accustomed to on LI

John Wayne...

...was not a sailor. He had a converted U.S. Navy WWII mine sweeper at the Vancouver Yacht Club in British Columbia.

Sailboats in Texas??

OK in response to seadaddlers comment concerning sailboats in Texas. Some excellent sailing there, and I mean excellent. The second largest sailboat community in the world, is located on Clear Lake, off Galveston Bay. I have sailed the US coastline from Mexico to Long Island, and I do not know where the largest sailboat community is, but I have never seen anything like the marinas in Clear Lake.

Also check out other lakes

Hi Paul, Take a look at some of the other lakes around Dallas. I am at lake Ray Hubbard. Very nice marina (Bay View) I think that it's $235. per month. Good sailing, plenty of racing, no tides, And I am only 20 minutes from my boat so I get out several times a week. We often come out after work and go for a little sail, drop the hook and cook dinner, watch the sun set, sail back after dark and head home. Rodger

Links o Plenty for Paul

Paul, here is the link for many sailing clubs in Texas. It is found on the sailtexas.com website. Please don't take offense (or be offensive) but sometime the Northeastern sailor can be very snobby about sailing outside of the famed east coast and Florida (where all of them migrate to for retirement) People in Boston and NY would be AMAZED at three things: First, there's a whole new world west of the 13 colonies and its BIG-bigger than Dallas as they say. So Y'ALL don't be messin' with Texas Second, there is a whole lot of sailing west of the colonies (besides the Great Lakes), a lot of it in Texas, and its not all just on the coast. As mentioned in other post-Valiant Yachts of offshore passages? Lake Texoma! Finally, those of us in those areas that sail, sail with a LOT of passion! Yes, we've sailed on the C'peake, BVI, and coastal Florida-but we love to sail! So whether it be lakes, rivers, or even mud holes-we love to sail. Don't mess with Texas, and you can have my boat when you pry my cold dead hands off the tiller! Yee Ha

Texoma

Paul, Welcome to Texas. I'll second the information provided by Jim Rushing. Come visit us over on the west side of Lake Texoma. The lake provides alot of diverse sailing opportunities, from cruising and gunkholeing in the various coves along the great expanse of this lake, to racing and just socializing. I'm not sure where you are in Dallas, but it's an easy trip up. At Cedar Mills Yacht Club, we have people from Oklahoma City to Dallas as members. A map is on our website here at: http://www.cmyc.org Come on up and visit. -David, Commodore, Cedar Mills Yacht Club

Great sailing.

Paul, Texoma is a great sailing lake with plenty of area to sail. Also, you can sail year round. The are boats in our marina ranging from about 20 foot to 45 foot. I keep an Islander 36 there and it is just about the perfect size for the lake. August & September in Texas are HOT with little wind, but the other months are just great. Email me and I'll send some pictures of the lake and give you other detailed info. kenperry9601@msn.com.
