I have had my Catalina 27 now for about 10 years and need to replace my outboard. For some strange reason it seems that hauling this 9.9 hp motor off and on seems to be getting harder and harder and so was wondering if a smaller motor like maybe a 6 hp would still propel the boat well enough? I only sail the lake so currents wouldn't be a factor but I would still like to be able to manuver the boat around too. Anybody know for sure? Appreciate any and all advice or suggestions.

Yeah you're right.

Thanks for the reply Ferg. Appreciate it. I do have the electric start and yeah you are right I wouldn't have one without after having one with it nor would I not have a roller furling jib. I love that thing! Yes mine does have the motor well. Looks just like yours. It's a pretty neat setup but being so low is a chore to get the motor off and on. You are right about the needed power in high winds so I guess I'm stuck with a 9.9HP. I was hoping somebody would chime in and say something like " Oh no a 6 hp motor is all that you need". Oh well. Thanks again for the reply and good sailing to you.

km1947 I was wrong….

…on one point, your boat is a 1977 model, (bet’cher wondering how I figured that out) so it weighs OVER 3 tons! I’m fairly sure the actual weight will be 6800lbs. Ferg

addl question regarding outboard

I have a 76 Catalina 27. With a 6hp Johnson, it is definitely underpowered if there is much headwind. I would like to put a larger motor on my boat, but am unsure of clearances in the well. What kind of 9.9 do you have. and what is the height from the transom attachment to the top of the cowling? And how much clearance do you have between the top of the cowling and the cutout. Thanks for anyhelp

I'd suggest

taking the maesurements yourself. That's the only way you're going to be sure you got it right. But you'll find that NONE of the new 4-stroke motors fit in the well. The best I've found is with a Johnson or Evinrude 2 stroke 9.9 or 15hp longshaft, before 2000 if you find a good one. They redesigned the motor in 2000, which is what my 15 is. I had to do some minor surgery to the lazarette hatch cover to get it to fit. (It fits in the transom cutout with about an inch or two to spare.) The previous one I had was a 1992 and it fit with no problem. This one of Johnson/Evinrude's most popular motors, very reliable, there are thousands of them out there. Parts are easy to find and relatively inexpensive. I've owned 3 over the past 30 years for my boats. I seem to get about 8-12 years of good reliable use (about 5000 hours at the rate I use it) out of them before salt water corrosion does them in.
