Never used one myself to sell and I've sold or traded four boats. Not that I'm negative on brokers--most are very knowledgeable, nice folks and I love chatting with them about boats. I just did not seem to need their services. There are some disadvantages. They're expensive @ 10% of the sale price, typically. Unlike real estate brokers in some markets, the "pressure" from yacht brokers
always is to come down in asking price. They want to move yachts-that
is their job. But also, sellers may have an overly optimistic view of the value of their boats. Sure, brokers can help you sell your boat; but, you could probably do that yourself if you get the price down far enough, which ultimately is what they try to do, plus save yourself the 10%, etc. [I do not wish to impugn any brokers or former brokers on SBO; I also have friends who are brokers.
