Howdy I’m new to the forum so I apologize in advance if my questions are redundant. I have searched the forum prior to posting. I pulled a 1972 Annapolis 17 foot day sailor out of a farmer’s field about two years ago and have been restoring it. I redid the standing and running rig, made a rudder out of aluminum diamond plate ,the part that hooks to pintel or gudgeon witch ever it is, and has the tiller attached, the and the bottom of the old pop up rudder, re glassed and reinstalled the mast step swing plate device, on and on. She was going pretty well out on the bay but the swing keel broke off. This made for a hairy crash very near some rocks when the wind picked up and blew me onto the beach. Holes patched other things fixed, underwear worn during crash thrown in trash, Of course I had to make a new keel sans buying so I took 2” thick oak (a patch for the floor of a semi trailer) and shaped it into a nice foil and glassed it swings up and down nicely and looks way kewl but now it floats up and bounces all around. I added some 3 oz torpedo trolling weights on each side but no love. I’m asking on this forum because this boat looks exactly and parts for a 1970’s era O day work. Long story longer any ideas on what I should do about the swing keel? It goes up into a trunk that is almost a s high as the gunwales, it uses a cable with a hole through the back edge of the blade up through a hole with a pulley spliced to a line then through a line stopper this is to keep it up it uses gravity to lower no other contraptions to raise or lower or lock it in place. Any Ideas? Should I break down and buy? Glass in how much lead?

I don't know too much about your boat, but after browsing a site I found out that it may be a Discoverer 17 built by the Annapolis Sailboat Builders Inc.. I wasn't able to turn up anything more on this boat. The old 14' O'Day Javelin sailboats had a steel centerboard that weighed 55 lbs if that's any help to you. Good luck!

I appreciate it. I guess to make it a simpiler question I'm looking for how much wieght to add to keep a swing keel down. Or if any one has made thier own swing keel on a 17' boat?

"centerboard was hollow fiberglass, and filled with water when you lowered it." Thanks Trinka I took what you found and ran with it and came up the quote above. Ok that puts in the reengineering mode.

My centerboard weighs about 60 lbs, but my keel weighs 800 lbs. A 55 or 60 lbs board will stay down with no problem on your boat. Good Luck with that.

I would say that none of hte O'DAY DAY SAILER parts would be interchangable with those of your DISCOVERER, or at least not without modifications to boat or parts. Unfortunately, Annapolis Sailboat Builders most likely didn't have someone like our Rudy Nickerson (former Parts Dept. Manager at O'DAY) who stocks replacement parts for the older boats. I had a great description of the DISCOVERER that I copied from an owner, he was a former employee of Annapolis Sailboat Builders and still owns a DISCOVERER, but unfortunately.... no contact info for him (would have been a great person for you to contact!) He would be able to give you dimensions of the original Centerboard (it's not a swing-keel). I'll post a scan of a listing that I found in a book from my library.

Here is what that owner had to say:
"I worked for the Annapolis Sailboat Builders Inc. around 1973 and I also own a Discoverer sailboat (number 115). It was made in 1968. I have a Discoverer brochure that has all the dimensions for this boat. Here is some of the info regarding original construction and equipment that came with the boat.

LOA 17' 7"; Beam 6' 4"; Weight 650# approx; Draft board up 9", board down 4' 6"; sail area 165 sq. ft; Mast above deck 22' 6"

Original Price $1,975.00 with Dacron main and jib sails.

Construction
Fiberglass reinforced plastic throughout
Teak coamings
Fiberglass rudder and centerboard, both kick-up
Vinyl rub rail
Aluminum mast and boom, both anodized
Stainless steel rigging and hardware
Self-bailing cockpit
Built in foam flotation for self rescue
Molded non-skid surfaces

Standard Equipment
