Dreamer's Rock

I have sailed the great circle around the eastern USA, the Caribbean Islands and sea, the Panama Canal, and the islands of the South Pacific, yet; my favorite anchorage is in the North Channel of Georgian Bay. It is Dreamer's Rock and it is located on the Bruce Panicula on the White Fish Indian Reserve Band Reservation. It is the point where adolescent Indians from all over Ontario mediatated on their role in their tribes upon reaching adulthood. It is a massive rock that sits in the tree tops such that it is invisible from the water but when on top of the rock thousands of acres of forests, waters, and mountains can be seen. Sea gulls fly below and in August the metior showers give you a feeling of holding a sparkler they are so vivid. Legend tells of one young brave who flew from this rock to an area fishing village, mystically appeared on the one lane path of Killarney, and as mystically disappeared on his return to Dreamer's Rock. If you are fortunate and time your visit well, you may be there for the Aurora Boralis. A spactular celestual event normally, but to be experienced on this rock is a spiritual experience you will remember vividly for the rest of your life. It is a difficult cove to enter so once in the cove you will be all alone for days at a time. If you want to know the secret of the enterance feel free to contact me and I will share it with you. anywhere on the southside of cape cod

I love anywhere around cape cod. My mooring is in Waquoit Bay. A few great ones are: Tarpolin Cove Hadley's Harbor Edgartown, MV Vineyard Haven, MV but my all time favorites are Tarpolin Cove and Hadley's Harbor.

i can stay anywhere

Iam happy no matter what as long as I have family and friends and Iam out on the water, Iam a happy go lucky guy.I usually meet my father in law and neighbor at a place call Sand city in Northport habour.I live in such a great place I rarely have to go out to the LI sound.To me its all about getting out on the water.Iam counting the days for spring.

The archangel reigns: St. Michaels and San Miguel

I second Nick's choice of St Michaels in the Chesapeake Bay area (although not strictly an anchorage) but would like to add it's namesake San Miguel as an absolute topper on the West Coast. Cuyler harbor on San Miguel is a big natural bay ringed by fabulous sand beaches and rugged rocky inlets where large herds of elephant seals can be observed. Also, one still can see some of the last abalones there and the kelp forests have to be seen (preferably from below) to be believed. I am not afraid to blow San Miguel's horn here as the seas are notoriously rough because of nearby Point Conception (the West Coast's equivalent of Cape Hatteras). Thus, amazingly few vessels tend to be anchored out in Cuyler Harbor. Also, it tends to blow a bit at night so a strong anchor set-up is needed. Finally, there are the great white sharks that keep many people from swimming or diving there. In fact, I remember a commercial sea urchin diver being killed by a shark there around 1994. The special attraction of San Miguel for us was that it is hard to convince yourself that the California Coast is nearby and that you are not anchored somewhere in Alaska or Patagonia (use the link to view a web-posted, copyrighted professional photograph of Cuyler Harbor). Sucia Island

Our favorite anchorage is Sucia Island in Washington's beautiful San Juan Islands. It's fairly diverse and the sandstone has been worked into interesting sculptures by thousands of years of wave action. Being a state park you are limited to a three day stay if you tie to either a buoy or the dock but, of course, on the hook you can stay as long as you like. And it's easy to spend a week there.

For sheer beauty, friendliness, food, entertainment and relaxation, Hydra tops my list of ports of call. You raft up, 3-6 boats deep at the wharf in this tiny harbor, you are greeted by 'taxis' in the form a burro drivers who will convey your luggage to an inn, if you desire, there is a lovely, protected swimming lagoon, restaurants, cafes, nightclubs in which to dance the night away, art galleries, and shops, charming, laid back inhabitants - and only 2 motor vehicles other than scooters (the garbage trucks) on the island. Vineyard Sound

Nantucket is great for that Island Feel but my TWO favs has to be a toss up between Hadley Harbor and Edgartown....depending on what kind of mood I'm in. Hadley for that serene evening and Edgartown for the ability to stroll the town and zip into the Navigator for a few libations.

Kelley's Island North Bay

Aside from anchoring for swimming, the only place to anchor within 50 miles of home is Kelley's Island North Shore. With the right weather conditions, it is easily one of the most idillic place on the Great Lakes! You are in the perfect place to watch the sun rise or set, and Put-in-Bay is just across the water. Penobscot Bay (Hen Island)

There are so many great anchorages around Penboscot Bay. If I have to choose one, i guess it would be Hen Island in Seal Bay on Vinalhaven. It's well protected with wonderful scenery and a great secluded beach to go ashore on a state owned island. Depth is about ten feet at low with good holding. There are never more than two or three sailboats (usually none) and an occasional lobsterboat.

Hey Jr Mell and Capt. Chris- Hadley is nice, but MY favorite spot is just on the north side of the Buzzard's Bay Wood's Hole- Quisett in West Falmouth. Great protection, almost all sailboats, you can just pick up an inexpensive mooring anytime as long as you get there before dark. No worries about dragging an anchor. In the am they come collect their modest fee. Serene and beautiful, with the sun setting into the water. It is especially pleasant after coming in from the usually bumpy transit of Buzzard's Bay. Wellfleet is also a fun stop if you can get a reservation and don't mind the 11 foot tidal range and a trip thru the canal. Roger

Kelly's Island North Bay?????

Your Missing allot more if you think the only place to anchor is the North Bay. We have spent many night's by the Monumnet at PIB and also the South Bay of South Bass Island. Plus the South Bay of Pelee Island. We for year's have left the dock Sat Morning and returned Sun evening with anchoring out all around the Islands. We have many times when the weahter has come out of the North anchored up close to Middle Bass Island and had a wonderful easy night on the hook. Cliff

St Augustine, Florida would be my pick. The city marina is very friendly and close to everything and the views are spectacular, not to mention that the ocean is within sight, while you are tucked up in the river.

Long Point Cove

In the North Channel of Georgian Bay. Surounded all around by rockey hills with only a small hard to find entrance. No eating places or music or even another boat and the clearest coldest fresh water. A sky just filled with stars and the smell of the oil lamp down below. A swim before breakfast and then to find another anchorage for another night. I have also sailed in the Bahamas and the Abacos.

IN MY LOCAL CRUSING WATERS, LITTLE HARBOR ON THE WEATHER SIDE OF CATALINA ISLAND IS A LOCAL PARADISE...FEW BOATS EVER GO THERE, NO MOORING CANS, SECLUDED, AND GOOD DIVING AND HIKING. MY OTHER FAVORITE IS THE TOBAGO CAYS IN THE CARIBBEAN. HARD TO BEAT THE SCENERY, AND CLEAR, WARM WATER.

The best anchorage above 5200 feet!

Nothing better than dropping an anchor at Duck Bay on Payette Lake in the shadows of the Salmon River Range at sunset. Time to Fire up the grill, open a bottle of wine, and watch the Osprey fish for a little dinner. The wine goes down quickly, good thing we have a long night to sleep and dream about a steady breeze and mountain sunshine.

What can I say ... clear water, the historic Cape Lookout lighthouse, and a protected anchorage behind a thin strip of sandy beach. Once things get quiet in the anchorage, you can even hear the Atlantic waves crashing against the beach during the night. This is my Hunter 34 at anchor there in 2001.
