Allens Cay, Exumas, Bahamas

Best anchorage on Atlantic Coast! And the Exumas best Cruising Area close to U. S.

Norman's Cay ?

Capt. Beto: I’ll second your opinion of the Exumas, as being the best nearby (SE - US) cruising grounds. Although Allen’s Cay is a really neat place (Iguanas ashore, & great hunting/fishing all around), and has a deep sand bottom (good holding) - I’d caution that it’s almost always pretty “rolly”, and gets pretty crowded with more than a few boats. I think I might recommend nearby “Norman’s Cay”, over Allen’s (at least for longer stays). That said - I could recommend almost anywhere in the Exumas, for one (or several) reasons or another. IMHO, Gord

Smokehouse Bay

Smokehouse Bay is a 360 degree protected bay in New Zealand. You enter through a cut about 40 feet wide, and the water inside is crystal clear and like glass. There is a smokehouse and shower, along with clothes washing facilities which were built and maintained by cruisers, all very primitive, but ingenious. You build a fire to heat water which goes into the claw foot bathtub in a shed. There is a rope swing, and an interesting hike up the hill to the water tank. The stars are fantastic, as there is no other light to be seen. We were there on a charter in 2003, and I will never forget it.

Allens Cay best anchorage?

Might be one of the worst overused in the Exumas! Poor bottom / bad currents and those pesky Iguanas on the beach, daily visits by the tour boats from Nassau...

Mystic Seaport, CT or Marina Cay in the BVI

Mystic Seaport in June or Sept or Oct is beautiful (use the North end. Marina Cay in the BVI always has a breeze yet it is very sheltered Snorkling is great & shore stuff is nice

Re: Dreamers Rock

I read Capt. David speak of Dreamer's rock in the North Channel. Where is that? i am planning a sail to the North Channel this August. We sail out of the south of Georgian Bay and want to spend some time in August in the Killarny area, baye finne and The Bustard Islands. You said I could e mail you for directions but, I do not know how to get your e mail out of this post to get in contact with you.

Can't Agree More

:) Geisler Point is at the mouth of Bodkin Creek - head out from here and all of Chesapeake Bay is in your reach if you have time - My slip is 1200' from the bay - once there its nine miles north to Baltimore's Inner Harbor or nine miles south to the Bay Bridge or Annapolis - sail almost due east for seven miles and your in Rock Hall on the Eastern Shore where crab cakes and fried chicken are the fare du jour every day.

Coches Prietos, Santa Cruz Island

One more plug for Santa Cruz Island! Coches is on the less visited south side. One of the best anchorages in the Channel Islands

Coopers Island, BVI

We just seemed to have a great time at Coopers...we loved Marina Cay, Little Maho, Mosquito Island and Jost Van Dyke, but it must have been a magic day at Coopers. The snorkeling, dining, and fishing was wonderful! I think about it every time someone asks me about sailing BVI.

Agree, Coopers is one of my favs.

Nice restaurant right on the beach too. We had a good time there though if I remember correctly the anchorage was a little grassy.

Chester Basin , Nova Scotia

I met up with my good friend Vic in Glocester Mass. and got aboard Sarah Gamp to crew on a trip to nova scotia. The old gaff rigged ketch faithfully got us there sometimes using the Leister English built diesel but mostly with sails. The third stop we made in Canada was in chester Basin as sunset wss nearing and His old cruising friends were ashore waving excitedly welcoming us to thier home and a hot shower. The sil in Mahone bay as we cutiously made our way past Islands and out croppings of rocks was intense. but the end was rewarding. I took a picture as we left in the early morning fog and have fond memories when I look at it. You can make out the two msts of Sarah Gamp in the background
