Anchoring opinions

I would be interested in some comments and actual experiences with anchors and anchoring on a Cat30 well any boat in that size range.My Cat30 has the "standard" Danforth 13s with about 15'of chain. In my sailing area (Georgia coast) these probably work ok. (Haven't used them yet)I'm interested in experiences with Bruces/claws or other styles and weights. I need another primary anchor and was tending toward a 22lb. Bruce type with 50' of 1/4 ht chain. Thanks for any comments or opinions.Travers C30 Dawn (0088)

Anchoring a C-30

Lots of opinions out there about which is best. I don't know your area's bottom, but here are the differences between the anchors. You can decide which is best for you. Danforth is the lightest

Can never get too big an anchor

The only anchor too big for your boat is the one you can't pull up. Whatever size the mfr recommends for your boat, go up one size and you'll sleep a lot better.LaDonna

try a S/L 22

I grew up in that area and now have a 22lb bruce knock off anchor that i love. If you are going to drop the hook in the mud down there make sure you have plenty of chain. more scope means more sleep. i would worry about the tide changes using a dan.I use 20' of 1/2 and 200' of 1/2 rode and had one time when i wished the 3 other boats rafting me had their own anchors.Of course if the boat does break loose you now have a heck of a time getting out of the mudwihch is about all there is near WI

increasing anchor effectiveness

Here is a trick this will increase the holding power of your existing anchor. It acts like adding a whole lot of extra chain to your rode without all that chain. get a 10lb mushroom (cheap weaight) and attach a big clip to it. after you set your ancher, clip the mushroom to your rode and let is slide down the line. this will alter the angle of force on the ancher just like a lot of extra chain, giveing it better holding power.
