So my shackle on my anchor is 7 years old and was thinking about replacing….. a little rust on the pin but not so bad. 43 foot, 23,000 lb boat, 55 lb anchor and 260 3/8 chain.
One I’m using has been great (hasn’t broke!) but just curious before I buy a new one.

thanks
Greg

Hi Greg. Replaced the original swivel shackle on our 35,000 pound 1991 boat two years ago. It was due, but still held well even after many years of use. Went with a Crosby brand hot dipped galvanized swivel shackle from Defender.

If you have even the tiniest doubt about that shackle, change it immediately. Why not, it's a cheap part and IMO, a boat's anchor tackle is the most important bit of safety gear aboard?

If you want to use a swivel the only one I recommend is the Mantus. Otherwise for a non-swivel I prefer Crosby or Chicago branded load-rated shackles (mounted so the pin is through the chain and the bow is through the anchor slot). Never non-branded shackles.

I would say that if you don't have any reason to suspect its structural integrity, there is no rush to replace it. But, if you suspect it, you might sleep better to just do it.

Yea though I had a photo but guess not. After 7 years the only signs of rust are on the pin….. and it’s not flaking or anything like the one Rich has a picture of. The rest looks fine. It’s a wll 2.6t….. I am a “why not change it” guy especially when it’s only a couple of bucks. And we always anchor. Just thought thought I’d see what others are using…..

Thanks
Greg

I have an opinion. “If you think it may need replacing, you are probably correct!”

I have a swivel made by Mantus. I felt it was a solid design.
