Anchor Riding Sail

I have a Hunter 40.5 that I bought 2 yr. ago. the boat hunts at anchor or on a mooring, it will shift though about a 70 deg ark with winds 8 to 20 knots. The boat has a dodger and a bimini top on it plus inflatable on davits at the stern. I just bought a Banner Bay riding sail (their largest 9' x 10.6' x 10.6') and have tried every configuration it sailing it that I can think of. On one side of the split back stay, rudder midships or hard port or hard starboard, changing the sheet from toe rail to mast to opp. toe rail. Also made up a phantom back stay and again tried everything that I did with it on the split back stay, so far no improvment. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to stop a 40.5 from sailing at anchor?

Suggestions

A riding sail can be a good idea but can also make things worse, depending... the fin keel creates a delicate balance, and putting too much windage at *either* end can be bad. What have you experimented with as far as the anchor system is concerned? Is it really as bad on a mooring as it is on anchor? If not, let's talk about the rode. Otherwise, try a bridle arrangement, the idea being to introduce some lateral restraint, or routing the rode off-center rather than directly over the bow-roller. Anchoring articles which you may or may not find interesting at the link...

sounds too simple but

someone told me a trick that seems to work on our 40.5 Jon. We drop a 5 gallon bucket with a 2 in dia hole drilled in it's bottom off the stern.

Put the rudder over

dumb as it sounds it works on my 37.5' Legend. Hunts all day long with the rudder amidships but put it over to one side or the other and she takes up a steady position to one side of the "anchor rode - wind" line. don't ask me to explain it. The wife tried it and it worked!!! Go figure.

Thanks for responding

Thanks Don, I will try the 5 gal bucket this weekend. Thanks Craig, The boat is as bad on a mooring or a single anchor. I have tried what some anchor articles suggest. I E using 2 lines from the mooring one to the bow and the other to the stern cleat and forcing the boat to be on one tack, this works but puts a lot more force on the mooring and in a crowded mooring field moves the boat to a different relation to the other boats around it. I am looking for a solution to keep the boat on the same heading with the rest of the moored fleet. Thanks for all the great help Jon

bucket

I also have the sailing on the hook problem. The bucket idea sounds simple enough and I am about to start a two week cruise. How deep off the stern do you drop the bucket? Thanks for the great Idea

For what it's worth, I tried a riding sail on my 410, rigging every configuration possible, and found it to be no help whatsoever. Got a bit of assistance going to a all-chain rode, but that boat still charged its anchor in winds over 15 knots.

Riding Sail

I use a old storm jib from a 21' sailboat rigged to the topping lift for a riding sail on my Passage 42. This puts the riding sail a bit more fwd than is optimal but is the only option on the center cockpit design. It works pretty well at anchor if the wind is steady from one direction. Enough of a chore to rig that we don't use it much but it does keep the boat pointed into the wind.

My riding limited experience

I just tried this last weekend. I rigged the riding sail from the boom topping lift, the boom fitting and forward on the boom I used a rolling hitch. I was a bit difficult to get everything tight enough but when I did I found the hunting reduced significantly. I don't know if I would want that up while a T Storm rolls through.

Thanks for all your Help

I experimented with the sail last weekend, at anchor at Potter's Cove with winds 10 to 16 knots, I found that the boat would hunt between 70 deg and 100 deg. without anything. When I put the 5 gal bucket on the stern, it did not change the hunting at all. When I put the Anchor Sail on a phantom back stay ( rigged by running a line between my two stern Davits and then mounting the phantom back stay in the middle of that line, this way the phantom back stay is actually at a point further aft than you could get it by mounting it directly on the stern of the boat, therefore it giving even more leverage) I found that I did get a good reduction in hunting. With the anchor sail deployed I found the swing to be between 35 deg and 55 deg, not perfect but to me significantly better than I had before. In conclusion I intend to keep the sail and use it when I can. Hope this helps you
