Harold, tri-color masthead lights are legal...
and practical for off-shore cruising but not in protected waters where ocean swell distance visibility is not an issue. This unit replaces whatever masthead light you have already and combines running and anchor lights. You will still need to switch them separately. Terry

To anchor in an undesignated anchorage,(an anchor light is only required in an undesignated anchorage) with your tri color, you have to be able to turn off the red/green leaving the stern portion lit. However the forward part of your boat must be lit to complete the 360 degree required by an anchor light. This is achieved by turning on your steaming light(the light that is at or just above your spreaders). When at anchor you have to show 360 degree white light. If you day sail lights are not an issue. Thomas, if you anchor, a 360 degree light is required but it can be supplied by other devises like oil lamps, lanterns, etc. but must be visible for 2 miles. r.w.landau

COLREGS say "all round light"
Why do you think using the white section only of a masthead tri-colour along with a steaming light would be OK? They must not be confusing to others per the COLREGS, and this combination could easily be mistaken for a boat in motion and not at anchor. The all round light must be on the same plane when seen on the horizon. My masthead tri-colour only uses one bulb to illuminate all three displays - I have never seen one with separate light bulbs. I have seen tri-colours with a separate anchor all round white light, which uses a separate light bulb.
