Anchor chain Swivel Recommendations?

When raising our anchor yesterday, we found we had raised a large rock (about 12" in diameter) in the anchor. After I pried the rock out of the anchor, and finished stowing the anchor, I happened to examine the shackle. I found what appeard to be a hairline crack in the shakle. I need to replace it before I go out the next time.

I'd like your input and recommendations on swivels for chain to anchor. We have 400' of 5/8" chain, on a 75 pound Bruce, on a 78,000 pound boat.

Thoughts?

I think the general feeling of most people is that the swivel is a weak link that is also difficult to inspect, and should be avoided most of the time.

Agreed, but only if it is an inferior knock-off swivel. You could do a search on the word swivel, with Maine Sail as author, and find lots of discussion about this topic.

swivels have caused more breakaways in my old mooring field than snapped yacht braid, which is another high level failure in big winds and gusting conditions. goood luck. i do NOT use a swivel.

I think it is possible to somewhat isolate the swivel from stress. The idea is not mine, and I don't recall precisely, but I think I recall it might have been a "Yachting Monthly" article. Between the swivel and the anchor, install three chain links.

Wasn't a large batch of those recalled a year or two ago because they were failing left and right?
