Anchor bow roller

My H27 has no embedded metal plate in the forepeak. I thru-bolted the anchor roller with a small backing plate. You should be able to remove the bulkhead panel in the v-berth to gain access to the area.
Hi Heritage,

The anchor locker is ahead of the v-berth and in front of the anchor locker, there is no access to the fine part of the bow and therefore no way to through-bolt the roller. I have to drill new holes and utilize one or two of the existing bolt holes if possible.

Just thought I would provide an update. I installed the roller. Basically mounted on the plate and used a centerpunch to mark the hole locations. and then drilled 5/16" hole's (for 3/8" round head stainless bolts).

I tapped each hole (Breaking 2-taps.....Stainless is such a pain. even with lots of oil).

- There was no plate in the bow.
- I used thickened epoxy in each hole and threaded the bolts in. Once mostly set I backed the bolts out.
- I then mounted the roller and used 4000 to seal each hole.
- I used butyl tape under the roller as the roller is aluminum and the plate is stainless.
- There was no way to access the underside of the holes and therefore are threaded and bolted through the stainless plate into the hull.

I have had no issues with the roller/anchor all season. It is rock solid.

Cheers!

Glad to hear the good news on the install. Any chance you can send pics of in progress and/or completed work? Thanks.

Congrats @ShawneH on the successful attachment of your bow roller to your Hunter 31.

While I am unconcerned about the way you made the attachment, where the boat will be sailed on an "inland lake", the lack of through hull attachment with stout backing plates on a boat being sailed in open ocean waters would concern me.

Bow rollers provide a wonderful convenience to the lake and coastal sailor. When sailing in open ocean or waters where large waves might break on the bow, the bow roller is a lever with a large, heavy, pointed metal weapon just waiting to be wrenched from the boat and beaten into the fiberglass hull.

Potted bolts in fiberglass are just not as secure as thru bolted attachment with solid backing plate.

We sailors need to consider the conditions to which we might subject our boat and manage our modifications accordingly.

Thanks for sharing your modification and again congrats. If you get the chance please post pictures so that you might inspire or assist other sailors as they consider improving their boat.

I’d like to add a bow roller to my 84 Hunter 31 has anyone done it so I can I use the existing holes/bolts?(see picture)
Is there any problem with that.
Any ideas suggestions welcome I’d love it to be an easy install.
oh yeah I’m adding a Rocna30 if that makes a difference.
Thanks in advance.
Did you get the roller installed? Have any pics? I am hoping to do this soon on the exact same boat.

Thanks.

Haven’t got to it yet but had lots of time to think and research. Lol
What I came up with is to find a bow roller that has the right dimensions I like Lewmar 66840009 and I am going to lay it on my bow and mark correct position then remove stainless plate from boat and take it with bow roller to welder and have him weld together then reassemble, This seems to be easiest, secure, cheapest option. Good luck.

I didn’t take any pictures during the install, but I can take pictures of the finished install.

That will be pretty solid. I am happy with the install I did. With the bolts, epoxy, and the 3M adhesive, I am not too worried about it. Let us know how the install goes.
