Has anyone installed a Balmar alternator on a 323? I am trying, but it won't fit the bracket that's in the boat. Do I have to have a bracket fabricated or is there a stock solution? Geoff
Geoff,I put a Balmar on our Yanmar and it required cutting a small spacer for the bracket. Balmar included two sizes with the alternator, and you use the one that fits the bolt diameter and then cut it to the proper length.Balmar makes two frame sizes, one with one bracket foot for Yanmars (and others) and one with two bracket feet for Volvo (and others). I assume you have the right frame for your engine.Dave
It has a 2" foot and that part fits fine. It's the adjusting bracket that needs to be stretched. A single straight bar with a5/16" hole in one end and a 5/16" slot for adjusting in the other will do. The problem with this is that now there are 2 movable points to vibrate loose. I was hoping there was an off the shelf bracket that triangulated so I could get back to one movagble point.Geoff
I bought an alternator at autozone a self exciting xelf regulating 40 amp AC for about $45. Just used a generic adjusting arm. The generic broke and I got a free one at a junk yard that was more heavily made. It has worked for over three years!!!
Interesting comment on JRM. I have purchased $3000 of equipment from them along with an agreement for lifelong support. They no longer support. Long story and I'll not usurp time for it here. My opinion of JRM is very negative. Geoff
I have not purchased from them, was contemplating a Balmar & stayed with my existing, but found him to be very helpful pre-potential-purchase. What type of equipment have they bagged the support on?
Shorty, I'm happy to talk about my interactions with JRM but probably should not take up forum space. email me if you want more info. Click my name on a post and I think it opens an email window addressed to me. Geoff
