My wife and I are proud new owners of 5244 .We are doing lots of clean up and adding new equipment . I will need to put the motorola alt back on and will need advice on wiring . The quick connect is easy but what about the 2 orange lines?I have traced them to the tack and volt meter. Do they both go on the alt "output ' POST ? Also does anyone have experience on installing the gauhaure sp solid vang system ?

Vang

Hi Ed, Congrats on the new boat, you will love it. I also just purchased the solid vang from Garhauer. I can't install it until I launch on May 10. A friend who installed one on a C320 said no problems, just follow the directions. If you search the archives with "solid vang" you will get lots of tips. Fair winds, Dave S/V Westwind #6371

Rigid Vang

The preferred term is "rigid vang" or "rigid boom vang". I installed a Garhauer on my C-30 and it's not a difficult job. You do need to be careful. Attaching the fitting to the boom is the toughest part. A few hints: 1. Make sure the bracket is centered (port and starboard) on the bottom of the boom. The fore and aft position is determined by following Garhauer's instructions. 2. Clamp the bracket on the boom before drilling any holes. Use a good center punch and a sharp drill bit. 3. Drill and tap one hole at a time, installing the bolt before drilling the next hole. 4. Mount the bracket using the two center holes first. That way, if you need to adjust the fore and aft positioning, you can shift forward or back by one set of holes without drilling unnecessary holes.

Question for Bob Camarena

Did you use tapping screws and if so what size?

Not Self-Tapping!

You should use 1/4-20x1/2" or 1/4-20x5/8" round or pan head machine screws. Drill and tap the holes as already explained. When mating SS and aluminum, it is also a good idea to insulate/isolate the two from each other. I used a layer of electrician's tape between the mast/boom and fittings. A dab of silicone or similar on the screw heads works well, too. Tom Soko Julandra C36 #659

Check the wiring diagram

Ed, You should get a wiring diagram for the engine/engine panel. If it didn't come with your owner's manual, contact Seaward Products (310-699-7997). They make the engine and electrical panels for Catalina and are very helpful. In most installations, the tach wire is gray. While you are talking to Seaward, you should order and install the wiring harness upgrade. It does away with the 8-prong plug that is prone to corrosion, voltage loss, and lots of mysterious electrical ailments. Having two orange wires leads me to believe something is not hooked up correctly. Good Luck with the project. It's a great boat! Tom Soko Julandra #659

Tom is right!

Tom is right. Double check the size when you get your vang. They will tell you what to use. You should use silicone or thread compound on the threads.

This is how my C-36 is wired.

Ed, I am replacing my Motorola alternator with a new high output alternator. What I have coming out of my old alternator is a purple wire coming off the B-, which is for the engine switch, one orange wire which powers the engine panel, and a blue wire coming off the AC TAP for the tachometer. My orange wire goes from the alternator to the voltmeter on the engine panel, and then to the switch. It appears to be wired to the battery switch, so that when I turn on the batteries, my panel is powered up. I would double check, but my guess is that the wire that runs to your tack should be connected to the AC TAP on your alternator. Make sure you don't have a second wire (sometimes grey) that runs from the alternator to the tack. Hope this helps. Les Murray s/v Ceilidh '86 C-36 #560
