Went to see the Robert Redford movie All Is Lost last night and found it very entertaining. It's more about survival than sailing but liked how he portrayed a sense of calm in what I would call a panic situation. Would recommend it.

I saw movie trailer looks like he was impaled by a shipping container and things just got worse from there, like that was not bad enough.
I plan on seeing All is lost and Captain Phillips.
thanks for your review

Haven't seen the movie, but I am sure having one's boat sink from right underneath them is a pure epiphanic, if not a "come to Jesus" (in a secular way) moment in life.

A bunch of people from our club went to see it today. As a sailor, I recommend waiting 'till it's on DVD or Netflix or something. Inaccuracies and stupid actions will just frustrate other sailors...

So many "good" movies spoiled by reality. Watching "Hunt for Red October" on the mess deck of a fast attack submarine though was a hoot

How the movies mess up our military uniforms and insignia is one of the things that distracts me! Chief

I think Iron Eagle did the most to damage the public image of the military and the USAF in particular. The idea that a teenager (with the help of an O6) can essentially steal an F-16 to go on a rescue mission was bad enough. Add to it the fact that all scenes of the fighters taking off showed drop tanks only but when in the air the ordnance needed most for the scene magically appeared and in impossible quantities!

That said, I too want to see Capt. Phillips in the theater but can wait for All Is Lost to come to HBO...

I was wondering if All is Lost would have inaccuracies sort of like the Viagra commercial.
you would think in such a big production they would ask a couple of us sailors from sailboatowners.com to fill them in on perfect sailing terms and actions ;)

I went and saw it last night. It was an interesting movie. There isn't that much sailing stuff in it though.

Since there are a lot on here that will go and see it I don't want to spoil it. Some of the things I saw I had to shake my head though.

The bad part is that after the movie my wife looks at me and tells me that I am not single handing anymore. Ugh! That will pass. She then said I should get an ERIB if I am single handing.

I explained the difference between coastal sailing and offshore sailing to her but she was still concerned. Preparing for each in the right way helps a lot.

My wife and I saw it too. She was asking where his EPIRB was along with other really basic emergency equipment that anyone would have if they were off shore. They should have consulted some people that really cruise. Too many actions that were too late or not taken. I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it. Disappointing..

I agree with you Mac1840!

Someone was telling me that they supposedly consulted with some sailors, but they must have asked the question "what should you never do......"

I saw this with the whole family last weekend. The consensus between my Wife and 2 daughters was that we would have been better prepared and would have done better in the same circumstances.

So now I guess I have the green light to start looking for a Cal 39, LOL!

If hollywood put in all the accurate detail needed to satisfy whatever group, a) it would not be entertaining to those not in-the-know, b) it would be boring as hell to everyone because nothing bad would happen. It's all fantasy anyhow. Even real events can't be retold in any medium without omission, bias and embellishment occurring. That in itself does not make it invalid, on the contrary, it's interpretation, that's what we do.

They do mess up military flicks (and the ubiquitous cop drama) quite a bit - how many cops single handedly take on a hanger full of mobsters without calling for backup?, for that matter, how many mobsters hang out in hangers?

...and don't get me started on the evening news.

In general, I agree, like this and Dead Calm.

Titanic however was pretty good as far as the ship stuff was presented. The rest? Hmm...:)

agreed.... I enjoyed Capt Phillips far more than All is Lost, primarily because I kept saying, "WTF, WHY IS HE ______??? many times through the movie. I think if you go in there with the understanding that you're watching what happens when an inexperienced or unprepared person goes to sea then you will enjoy the movie much more.

BTW, not to spoil Capt Phillips, because it is a good movie, but if you read the reports from most of the crew (aka every one of them that didn't sign an NDA from the film production company), while the general sequence of events were all correct, they paint a very different view of the Capt, where his actions were quite reckless and ignorant, far from the calm thoughtful and self sacrificing person he was portrayed as in the movie.
