Albin Vega Wanted

Where did you find it Melanie? Was it a rebuild, or new? Do you know the hp? One would think one would need at least the hp of the 2GMF? But no problems huh???

I really like this volvo-penta, decent power and purrs like a kitten when running. Just don't want this to be a wallet drainer if I can find something more solid and dependable somewhere?!!?

Chris,

Paul and I installed the Yanmar 1GM ourselves, with little, if any
modification. We've been quite pleased with it. It has sufficient power for us, even
with the swift Maine tidal currents, which you are well familiar with.

Hey,

Thanks for chiming in Wilhelm. I have actually heard from two other folks who have re-powered with the 1GM and seem to like it just fine. Are these still being made, or did you buy a used (rebuilt) model?

I have never attempted a refit, but I have heard that will a great deal of patience, a few bruised knuckles, some choice four letter words and a little luck, even those of us with little mechanical knowledge can get the job done!

Thanks WL!

I replaced my Albin gasoline engine with a Yanmar 1GM (10

You really don't need a 2GM; the 1GM fits good and is a
good engine. It pushes my Vega about 6.5 mph, fuel
consumption is about 4.5 to 5 hours per gallon.
I put the engine in myself- no problem, though it needed
some grinding.I reused the 25mm stearn bearing and stuffung
box with a 25mm shaft. (and 3 blade prop)

Hi Hans/everyone, have you checked out the one for sale in San Diego?

It looks to be in pretty great shape. I am actually looking for a
Vega myself right now, and am going to check it out this weekend as
well as just hang out in San Diego. However, right now the owner will
not come down in price, and when you factor in the 7% California sales
tax and getting a trailer to get the boat back to Texas, etc., it is
pretty expensive for a Vega with no inboard engine.

I have also checked out the one for sale in Galveston on Yachtworld.
It is in very good structural shape but is pretty sparse and needs
some upgrades...winches, AC power, better stove, top coat, and other
odds and ends. Also it needs a new outboard engine, and would need
the engine mount moved in order to mount a windvane.

I guess I should tell everyone a little about myself...I am 25 and
live in Austin. About 2 years ago I completed a long bike trip
(www.texas4000.org) and decided that I was going to learn how to sail,
save every penny I could, and then buy a boat and sail around the
world (or at least wherever I felt like). So, I've still got some
saving to do, but I ran across the Vega in Twenty Small Boats and it
is really a top candidate as far as manageable size, safety, sailing
characteristics, price, etc.

Well, best of luck looking! I'll let you know if I check out anymore
for sale around the country. I am looking for a Vega that is geared
towards serious offshore sailing, and inboard/outboard engine is not
very important.

Cheers,
Nick

Hi
I bought a new one- they are still available, but
expensive, I paid close to $6000, but it was worth it.

Wilhelm,
Approximately what are your RPMs at 6.5 mph?
Can you tell me what is the brand and part number of your 3 blade prop?
Thanks,

Hi Chris

Due to my personal interest I cant mention

Beta BZ482 (13.5HP) or Beta 16 (16hp) or Beta BD722 (20hp)

Yanmar are good but personally I would go for a 2GM, I know Wilhelm will
say about his Yanmar 1GM but I have been able to do comparasions and
found in heavy weather or strong tides then the 1GM was just not up to
the job.

During the Scottish Vega Rally three years ago we had Vegas with:
Beta BZ482 (13.5)
Beta BD722 (20)
Volvo MD6A (10)
Yanmar 1GM

I tried all the different engine types in strong tidal conditions. Found
the low down torque of the Volvo MD6A certainly out-performed teh Yanmar
1GM even though the Volvo was over 30 years old and wasnt in good
condition. Obviously the two Betas outperformed the rest but they were
fairly new (5 years and 2 years old).

Hope this helps and Im trying not to be biased towards the Beta.

Cheers

Hi all

I have a yanmar 2gm fitted to my boat (series 1) She runs fine, just came
back from St Vaast to Portsmouth last weekend - Motored the whole way into a
nasty chop head sea - Engine didn't mis a beat - 14 hrs door to door -
Average 5.7 kts - We sailed the whole way there, not touching the engine
till we arrived at the harbour entrance, with an average of 6.8 kts under a
stary friday night sky - one of the best sails all season!!!!

Back to the 2gm, she is a tight squeeze but does fit - dip stick also tricky
to check until you get used to it.

Very powerful (handy for reversing) and very pleased with performance,
especially when it blows on the nose and I want to get home.

I bought the yanmar as I managed to get it cheap, but had to grind out old
engine bends, make new etc - A whole winters project!!!!!

I've also sailed with a 1gm in a vega - Once off Quashant (Island NW of
France) in a large Atlantic rolling sea you could really hear it struggling,
and it took hrs to get in (we could only make 2 - 3 kts through water due to
waves and wind)

1 gm on flat water is great, but with little reserve I'd say.

If I had a choice and wanted the best system I would look at a Beta 16hp,
mainly as it's a proven successful formula. They sound like they run a
little smoother, especially when cold starting.

I guess it all depends what you plan to do, budget and thoughts re. re-sale
value.

Most importantly, check your oil, filters and cooling intake.

Fair winds

Hi Steve!

Betas would obviously be my first choice, but I paid less for my boat than the cost of a new engine. I would like to think in 5-10 years I could have enough saved for a new Beta, at least that is the plan.

Perhaps they could take a look at the MD6A and see what an overhaul would cost. I loved how she ran on my trip up north, very powerful and purred like a kitten. Still having trouble getting her going...

Betas here in the States are about $10K.

Hi:
I run the engine at 3000 rpm (most efficient, max rpm for
this engine is 3600 rpm)
I have here the sail-slip for the prop- doesn't tell much-
it's a 13"/8" right turn, 25mm bore, sailor style.$269

Hi Steve;

please don't worry- I wouldn't mind if someone puts a steam
engine into a Vega.
When my Albin 21 gave up, I did some research and found the
Yanmar 1GM. I got all the dimensions- found out that engine
would fit (with some alteration of the mounting), and then
I got it, put the engine in and was happy ever after. It's
a noicy little engine, but I got used to it.
Next week my boat comes out for a paint job. But most
importantly, I need to clean the prop. I haven't been
sailing much this Summer (breaking two rips, my wife almost
losing an eye, and a multitude of other problems). Right
now, my prop looks like a vegetable garden. And the
barnaces found a good place to multiply...........

Hi

I have a Volvo 2002 18hp diesel in place of a Volvo MD11C, (Vega No 1731), fitted with a Kiwi prop, bags of power and quick response, I wouldn't entertain a smaller engine.

Hi Wilhelm

Not a problem. Hadnt cleaned the hull or prop of my Vega for 18 months
and wondered why I had a top speed of 4.8 kts !! After a good clean
back to sizzling speed and was sailing at 7.2kts two weeks ago on teh
return leg from Bembridge on the Isle of Wight. A fantastic sail,
double-reefed main and half a genny..

A friend of mine just emailed me and said that he has a rebuilt A4 with electronic ignition and the works for under $1K. I know...I know....gas is death..."A Bomb"...and all that. However, I had an A4 on the Sabre 28' and with 30hp she ran quiet as a mouse , no vibration to speak of....used to sneak up on the sea gulls when she was coming into the mooring! I know that the A4 is a pretty good fit.

Any suggestions? Thoughts?

There is plenty on the forum regarding engine refits. Like Wilhelm, we are
very happy with our Yanmar 1GM. That being said, at the time we repowered,
we really wanted about 12 hp and the only engines in that range were a
Westerbeke and Universal. They were much more expensive. Looking back at our log
entries from 1991, we purchased the 1GM for $2900, shipping $100, tax $174,
total $3174. We found a used 12-11 3-bladed prop for $50.00 at a used parts
chandlery. Other assorted items for the refit, such as shaft and what-not
probably cost another few hundred. We installed the engine ourselves without
much difficulty. Another log entry showed we motored at about 5.5 knots at
3000 rpm in 2-4 foot seas with wind on the nose.

We are very happy with our 1GM, but if we were faced with replacing it now,
we would probably go with the 13.5 Beta. Personally, I don't think the Vega
needs anything larger than that.

Smooth Sailing,

Melanie Halvachs

A previous owner fitted a 13hp 2GM in 'Little Star' - probably a
rebuild. It is a tight fit but doesn't seem to have needed much
alteration to the engine bearer positioning. It starts every time on
the first revolution, drives a fixed three blade and will run all day
at 2200rpm which gives me 45knots. Consumption seemed to be around
1.5 litres per hour last year, since when I have replaced the fuel
lift pump and had the injectors and injector pump serviced but not
done any long distance motoring so don't know if this has made any
difference.

Found this online and was wondering if i might be able to replace my dynastart with this unit. Used on the club cadet tractor, it seems to be a reasonable replacement item...will just need to figure out how to mount it properly?

I wonder if this will give me fewer headaches in the long run, and it is under $100.00 US!

Hi Steve,

I just finished writing a long reply, when I hit a wrong
putton and my mail was gone... so I try again:

I went out last Sunday and my top speed under motor was
about 5mph. I had a hard time getting out of the slip! But
I knew the hull was very dirty, and the prop looked like a
vegetable garden. Water temp here in Summer is about 30 C,
and the bottom fouls up quickly. I usually clean the
bottom 2 or 3 times during Summer, but this year everything
went upside-down/

Next Friday Oct.18th the boat comes out for a bottom
anti-fouling paint job. I'm no longer allowed to do that
myself (lawmakers.. what do they know), but I can change
the zinc on the prob and on the hull. I'm also going to
clean and wax the hull, and following Monday the boat gets
back into the water.

I'm looking forward to go sailing. I've had a bad year.
either I was sick, or my wife was sick, I had an invitation
to come to Singapore, all expenses paid, but had to
cancel,. I hope the sun starts shining again. For a moment
I even though selling my boat
