Hi Chris

I have owned a few Vegas with Volvo MD6A engines and the one I trusted
the most was when the temp gauge never worked so I didnt keep looking at
it! You will know if the engine overheats, believe me!

Wow...that's it??!?! So is that just a corrosion or salt problem due to the cooling water?

I had to buy a new sending unit when the contacts broke off. No
problem getting one from my local Volvo dealer.

Hi Chris - I think it was stuck in the "cold" setting - could be wrong..

Seems plausible that gunge in the coolant siezed it up - especially as
engine was rarely used by previous owner.

Anyway boiling the badness out of it did the biz.

I have the same problem Chris, I replaced the thermostat, which did
nothing and then, thinking it was probably the sender, simply
replaced it as well ( which I think ran about $65.00). The gage still
does not register anything. The gage gets power. Is there any way to
test the gage? On the same note I would like to get the tachometer
working. With the engine running it has power to the gage ( if I
recall about 14 volts) and I get a reading of about 3 volts, or a bit
less, at the gage, from the sending unit ( which on the Volvo MD7A is
on the engine block, and I'm told is a type of magnetic switch). I am
tempted to assume the sender is bad but with my experience with the
temperature sending unit I hesitate to order a new unit for the tach
( at $170.00). Is there a way to test the sending unit or the gage
first? I am at a bit of a dead end here, and am waiting for a local
marine electrician to have time for the Tern, for this and other
issues, but in the meantime . . . .

I had a similar problem with the oil gauge. After I start the engine, it
pegs high, off the scale. I replaced the sending unit and the gauge. The gauge
still doesn't work and my friend electrician won't work for at a discount
anymore. So I haven't been out in the boat much because I'm afraid I might
hurt the engine. MI I I still start it though help me any doesn't help me
anymore I still start the engine every week though.

Thanks John,

The previous owner of our boat used her for daysailing and club races and only "lightly" used the engine, so I don't think she was run under load much nor at the proper cruising speed. Just to get out to the starting line and back to the ball. I imagine there is plenty of grunge in that engine! Afraid to look!!!

1977 or newer, with a good gelcoat on deck and hull, please.

Had a promising one from Idaho surveyed that turned out to have major
delamination problems, so found a really clean one in Nova Scotia and
am having it surveyed this week. If anyone knows of one in the U.S. or
closer to the West coast, please let me know, as the transportation and
border logistics are expensive and daunting, especially with winter
closing in. All leads appreciated.

Dear Chris,

I have been searching the Web regularly, and have pretty much exhausted
what is listed. I was hoping to find anthing else that might be
available but not yet advertised. It is really hard to find a late
model boat with a good gelcoat. Thank you for your help. I'll post
the results of the search...

Probably about as hard to find a 50 year old sailor
with perfect skin. My gel coat was cracked so I sanded
it ALL off and painted it. 5 years later it looks
fine, but then again so does my skin and I'm almost
50. My eyes are not so hot though.

Hi Roger,

There is a whole range, anywhere from a few thousand dollars for
something that needs to be gone through to just over $20,000 for one
that has been completely redone properly. See Cedric's boat at
sailinglyra.com for an example.

Most are in the $10,000 to $15,000 range. There are customs duties,
but they are not cost prohibitive. The big problem is shipping,
unless you have the luxury of the time to sail it home. When the
transportation costs are a large portion of the purchase price, it is
hard to justify buying a boat from far away. The one I found in Nova
Scotia is beautiful, but will be a challenge to get home without
paying a huge premium over its value. If it were a $100,000 boat,
the costs would be such a small percentage of the purchase price that
it wouldn't matter. But with an Albin Vega, we're looking at paying
an additional 1/3 of the cost of the boat to transport it from Nova
Scotia to California.

So, I am still pursuing importing the one from Nova Scotia if the
survey pans out and we can come to terms, but boy would it be easier
to find one in California...

Just for kicks,

What other types of engines will fit the block on our Vegas? Besides the Beta....I am looking for a reasonable rebuild as my engine just seems to be "nickle and dime-ing" me to the poor house. Yanmar 2GM for instance? Perkins, Universal, etc...

Might be in the market for one this spring

Hi Chris;
I replaced my Albin gasoline engine with a Yanmar 1GM (10
hp).
You really don't need a 2GM; the 1GM fits good and is a
good engine. It pushes my Vega about 6.5 mph, fuel
consumption is about 4.5 to 5 hours per gallon.
I put the engine in myself- no problem, though it needed
some grinding.I reused the 25mm stearn bearing and stuffung
box with a 25mm shaft. (and 3 blade prop)
