Some time around January 19 thru the 22th there was a thread about a napa air filter that would replace a yanmar foam type. I can't locate it in the archives. The dialog involved Carl and Jim. My question is does anyone remember what the engine model the filter was for? Thanks

The archives are going through a major upgrade and 2002 hasn't been brought online just yet. Hopefully, if your question isn't answered here, they will be available in a few days. ph.

Why?

Pete: I am just curious on why you want to put a paper filter in place of the foam. I have heard from others that the foam has disappeared (presumed to be eaten by the engine). I have had the same foam in mine forever (unless the mechanic replaced it). You just clean them with soap and water and you are done. Some that have been to the Yannie classes suggest that you remove them all together. They claim that the engine compartment is clean enough and does NOT require one at all. My take on a diesel engine is that it needs every ounce of air it can get. I do not believe that a paper filter IS better in this case. The biggest pollutant in your engine compartment is going to be belt dust. You be the judge but I would re-consider a paper filter.

Hey Steve, he probably. . .

saw the price! I just ordered two from Torresen, almost $19. each. But like you mine have stayed soft and rubbery. I cannot imagine what would make them brittle and fall apart.

Just the foam!

Ed: Is that just the foam? or is it for the metal form that holds it too?

But, you gotta remember...

...besides it being a foam air filter, it is also a noise supressor. And I agree with the other post that paper won't cut it. The air has to pass through freely. Even if the engine compartment has clean air, what about that belt dust that always shows up? These things are cheap enough, especially when they can be washed. It takes a few minutes in clean water and just leave it out on the counter to dry. Good Luck.:)

Price does include the metal!

Ed: The price does include the metal frame ($20). As Paul mentioned this is a air silencer. I suppose that you have not received your yet!

Steve and why oh why ?

Steve, as for a answer as to why I want a paper filter is I'm not sure that I do, to be quite honest I was not even sure that the napa filter was or is paper. At this time I was just interested to see it and check it out, sort of to see what if any thing I would do about it.I will update you if I ever get the filter and let you know what I think. I'm still not sure about what engine they were talking about and if it is a cone shape filter like on my engine.Guess I will have to wait for the archive to update. Thanks to all who wrote back !

Why take a chance ?

I'll add my two cents and throw in this idea: you have an engine that is worth several thousands. Because most of us don't put that many hours on the engine, it generally requires very little servicing as far as filters (air, fuel, and oil) go. Once a season is not uncommon ! So why create the worry about something not made for the engine when for just a few dollars more you buy yourself peace of mind ? Good Luck

Ok Pete!

For a 20 dollar bill you can have a new foam and frame. These things will last for years so as Claude "argues" why mess with something we may not be sure about. Each time you change your oil, just wash the foam with warm water and soap. Squeeze out the excess water and let it dry. Reinstall it and you are ready to go. I could not agree with him more. Air, Oil and fuel filters go OEM. If someone comes up with something better, then maybe it is something to look at. The idea of saving $1-2 on a filter makes NO logical sense to me. If I have to try to get Fram or Napa to buy me a new engine because their filter failed, I'll probably be dead before they ever pay off.

Steve, I received air filters.

Just in case you come back here I received my Torresen order today. That $18.00 for the foam filter includes that little metal cage if that is what you meant. I thought you were talking about the "can", the outer cover that snaps on over the air intake. I always figured the metal cage was there for shape, to keep the foam ring from collapsing. I know a metal shop that can stamp those out for about a dime apiece. :)
