Pearson 36-2 Beaufort sc
I have a Pearson 36-2. Has anyone installed central a/c and heat? The modern units are compact, but finding a spot for it and the ducting is challenging. Any input appreciated.
I use a CruiseAir for now, but in Beaufort SC, it just can't keep up above 95F.

Jim,

Our P 36-2 has two units installed by the previous owner when the boat was new in 1987. The forward unit is a 7000 btu reverse cycle and the aft unit is a 10,000 btu reverse cycle. We use the forward unit about 95 percent of the time as it is adequate to about 90 degrees. The aft unit is overkill and could easily have been a 7000 btu unit. We turn it on only when it is realy hot, like the past two weeks.

The forward unit fits under the starbord settee with about 1/2 inch clearance to the top. The aft unit is in the port cockpit locker with a cabinet made to cover and isolate it. The only picture I have of the units is one of the forward unit.

The forward unit is ducted through the hanging locker to a tee with a small duct to the forward cabin and a larger duct to the main cabin. The aft unit is ducted to the aft cabin and to the main cabin with a duct under the head sink and through the main cabin hanging locker.

In your part of the world I believe you will need about 10,000 btu total. With the new compressors, a 10,000 btu unit MAY fit under the settee. Its worth checking.

If you have any questions just ask.

You will need heat!

And you only will sail for three months each season.

I was in Nova Scotia last summer and a fellow talked about the long summers we have in down in Maine.
I'm usually in the water May - October. Fantastic sailing in Sept & October. Crisp clear air.
To each their own. I'll take a shorter season to sail the islands of Maine. But yes, you better have heat early & late season!
