Air Conditioning a C30

I am considering air conditioning the boat as a winter project. Probably a 12,000 BTU. I'm sure others have done it. Where is the unit sited? How were the ducts routed? I don't use the macerator and may use that thru-hole for the heat exchanger water intake.

Under aft berth

I have an 88 Cat 30 with a tall rig. The prior owner installed the a/c unit under the aft berth. It's easily accessible through the top of the berth. The raw water intake is just aft of the engine with a bleeder valve set into the intake line. (Makes winterizing a snap and bleeding out any air locks.) I'd think that you could use the same through hull opening for the raw water intake for the engine. Unless you're using a generator, my a/c is for dock side use only and is never run when the engine is running. Thus, no competition for the raw water source through one intake. The main air return vent is located on the port side of the aft berth, just under the cockpit. My boat has only two cold air outlets. One is at the end of the aft berth where your feet go and the other is just over the ice box in the galley. All of these spaces were easily accessible for running duct work. My unit also has a heat pump so I can a/c or heat the boat. I've had no trouble getting warm or cool air forward into the v-berth. A small fan located on my starboard hanging locker moves the cool air forward. A friend who has a standard rig Cat 30 ran his duct work under the starborad settee and behind the hanging locker so that he actually has one air vent facing aft on the forward bulkhead and another blowing directly into the v-berth. His unit is also located under the aft berth. Here in TX we experience 100 plus degree weather on a regular basis and these units work great.

Installed Air on 88 Cat 30

I installed a Mermiad reverse cycle 12,000 BTU on my 1988 Catalina 30 this year. My 30 has the U shaped dinett so I installed the unit in the bench box. I too used the macerator through hull for the water intake it works fine for me. I then installed three vents, the first one is right under the dinett. The secound is under the sink cabnits in the galley. The third is under the V birth above the little step. Running the duct work was very hard but can be done! 12000 is Right

I also installed a 12,000 btu reverse cycle Mermaid in my '91 C30. I mounted on a wooden platform I built at the bottom of the port side cockpit locker. It vents directly into the galley next to the trash door. I ran a 4 inch flexible duct forward from a "y" connector in the cockpit locker to the forward portion of the vee berth and vented there. Along the way, I tapped off another "y" in the head. The air returns through the side wall of the aft berth directly to the unit. I installed a separate thru hull. Good luck - it's a worthwhile project.

A/C on Cat 30

I installed a 12,000 BTU Marine Air unit under the v-berth in my 1984 Cat 30. If you are interested in the details, e-mail me at cward@rangeresources.com.
