air coming from diesel thank

i am getting airfrom the diesel tank along with the fuel. i am not sure how to remove valves that lead into tank. i have cleaned and replaced the o ring in on off valve. if you have any sugestions please reply.

Air Leak

Hi Jim,You are looking for an air leak between the tank and where you see air. Suggest you check the hoses and fittings between and including the filter - if that's where you see air.A leak can be located using a vacuum guage and checking lines between the tank and engine. Suggest you contact a mechanic to find the problem. Will be money well spent.Bob

you reall have to check all lines from tank including all hoses and clamps and the fuel filters,you didnt say what kinda of engine you have but if it has any banjo fittings on any of these fuel lines you should also check these,the washers on banjo fittings are a one time use washer if its loose or you loosen them they should be replaced

An additional suggestion...

If your boat is an older model (my 272 is a 1986 model), I would recommend that you replace all the hoses. A couple of years ago (probably longer, my memory is getting fuzzy),when I replaced the old bronze fuel/water filter with a Racor spin-on, I decided to replace all the hoses and be done with it. It wasn't an expensive proposition and it gave me some peace of mind.If you've never worked on, or tried to access the fuel tank, you're in for s-o-m-e fun!! You can access the hoses on the tank if you remove the instrument panel box, and lo and behold, you'll find the fuel shut-off valve back there too, right where noone except the guy who installed the tank would ever know where to find it. When I replaced the fuel/water filter, I installed an additional fuel valve right before the filter. I used to make a hell of a mess when trying to replace the secondary filters on the engine.Fuel would run down into the engine bilge and was very hard to clean up.Aaah, but that's all in the past now. Installing new filters is a cinch when the fuel isn't spilling all over my hands and tools.End of story. My $.02Tom Ehmke
